I know Smailes varies its spelling - don't forget literacy levels were lower in those days - and the person writing the census details down would have written what he thought was said. You wouldn't believe the interesting spellings I've had for some members of my family - but I know they are the right ones from the names and ages of siblings.

You can work out brothers years of birth from 1851 census.

Definitely not that SMAILES is spelt wrong. I believe that Thomas Smailes married a jane and they had 5 children John, Robert, Thomas, James and William and James was married twice and thats why i got confused. My nans mum was called Gladys Yule and her mother was called Eleanor Smailes born 1891 then i believe that her parents were James Smailes and Jane Harbottle.
