Moggie Report 28 May 2008 12:55

Using the middle name search I have found 2 of the marriages that I listed earlier in the IGI.
1882 Emily Hiles Tranter &
1877 Hannah Hiles Tranter the father of both is given as James Hiles Tranter. James was married to Ann and their last child Abel was born in 1867 and Ann was a widow by 1871. Was he the James Tranter Hiles born c 1822 died 1868 and if so why the change round of names?

Mary
I use the Hugh Wallis site all the time to look up the coverage for parishes etc but never knew about the facility to look up middle names. Thank you for the info.Middle names are so important to FH research especially if you have a common surname. When I first joined GR middle names were included and it made searching for possible relatives/ancestors much easier than it is now.

I am going to phone Hereford Records Office I will let you know what they say

I have been in touch with the Hereford Registry Office and they are going to ring me back after 12-30

Yes, and a scribbled James in old script might look like Oonas.

Might be worth phoning the Hereford RO to ask them to take another look at the Christian name.

Which I think proves my point that James Hiles may have been aka James Tranter. As suggested eariler it might be an idea to get a copy of Henry's birth certificate to see who was named as his father.

I noticed those Tranter Hiles births yesterday, but I think they're probably not James and Diana's children, but the children of a man called John Tranter Hiles.

I found Charles Tranter Hiles by searching for Tranter on the Hugh Wallis middle names site:

and these are his parents:

I am beginning to think that James Hiles and Oonas? Tranter may be one and the same person.
Apart from the Firkins/Furkins/Hiles/Tranter combinations already found I thought you might be interested in some others, all found in Herefordshire apart from one marriage in Birmingham.

I have just been in touch with Hubert's gt gt Grandaughter, Mavis James and she says that Hubert had two brothers Thomas and Henry but she is not sure if Henry's real name was Herbert she can remember her Aunt refuring to one of them as Herbie

She has no birth certificate's for Huberts brothers so the name of thier Father is not yet known untill a certificate is aquired

I doubt if it is Enock but he may well be a relation

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 27 May 2008 12:59

It is unusual that Tranter's name is on the birth certificate if they weren't married, though. You might try contacting the Records Office and ask if they can find a bastardy order (an order for Tranter to pay maintenance for Diana's illegitimate children).

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 27 May 2008 12:54

No, I think it's the same person in view of the unusual names. I would think Diana took up with James Hiles, and the children then used his surname, although they never married. Hubert would have been too young to remember his father, so he may even have believed that James was his real father.

James

James Report 27 May 2008 11:40

Mary you correct on the certificate it says

Name if any Hubert Furkins but on the marriage certificate his name is Hubert Hiles Firkins Father James Hiles

Do you think I have got mixed up and they are two different people

Hubert's name on his birth certificate is Hubert Firkins Tranter - children's surnames aren't given on birth certs, but inferred from the name of the father (or mother if no father's named).
His Christian names are given as Hubert Firkins.

As Diana reverted to the surname of Firkins it looks as though she wasn't married to his father. I would guess the father's real name might be Jonas; presumably it was hard to read and the Hereford RO have mistranscribed it.

You could always get Hubert's brother's birth cert to see what father's name is given, but it probably has no father named as he's listed with the surname of Furkins, and has Tranter as a middle name:

Births Dec 1838 (>99%)
FURKINS Henry Frederick Tranter Hereford 26 153

I would guess that Diana never married Tranter, he died or disappeared and she took up with James Hiley. Odd that they never got married, though.

I can't find a baptism for Diana under any of her likely surnames.
