I wonder what he got up too after all this! I've just read it all properly and it made me laugh. What a character. He was at my Nan's wedding in 1936, it says he was a General Dealer!! Sounds about right!

I've just had a look. I'm glad it wasn't murder! I think my mum will be ok :). Think she guessed. I'll tell her later. I think that means when he stole from the Collins he actually stole from people he was living with as I remember that name on census. My nan never talked about her Dad so I am so pleased to how found out something even if he was a naughty boy!

I have found some info on our great grandfather please go to www.oldbaileyonline.org. key in george riches and look at points 10 to 14. Im sure its him quite a busy boy!!!!!
I thinks thats why Harry would have been called woods, george would have in in prison when he was born.
Ive posted it on here as I can see other members are also intrested.

It is on page 1 of this thread - Glitter has posted the family with Esther visiting her parents on 1901 with a 7 month old George Riches.

That is why I went to look for George Snr and found him in Prison.

I think my great nan had quite a hard life. She may have had a baby in 1901, where did you find that out? Is it Harry? I think he may have been born out of wedlock? in 1898/99. It has to be him. I will definitely send off for the article.

I don't think it can be anything too bad.

If it is him (and it does look promising that it is), - It raises a bit of a mystery - Did they have conjugal (spelling?) visits in those days as didn't his wife have a 7 month old baby on 1901?

Maybe he was 'in and out' and in again on 1901?

Must go and 'dig around' again.

I got the Row 59, No 5 from the 1881 census ages ago but have just found it again.

Do you think he could have been in there more than once? Only if the offence took place in 1897 and he married in 1900 and he was in there in 1901 census, would it be him?

I found mine by accident - he was in Broadmoor on the
1881 census - talk about the skeleton in the cupboard - he strangled his baby while he was drunk and then tried to slit his own throat with a blunt razor!

Poor guy rotted in there for near 20 years and was buried in an unmarked grave in Berkshire.

Here's hoping that George's misdemeanor was not on such a grand scale!

Make a note of the details for Mr Riches.

If you go in to the black sheep index where the alphabetical listings are you will see highlighted in red prices/order form click on it, print off the form fill in the details and send it off with your cheque - they will send you a copy of the clipping - mine took about a week to arrive.

There is a George Riches on there (Salmon Rd, Plaistow age 20) could be your man - whatever offence it was took place in 1897.

I think it costs about £6.00 to send for the newspaper clipping.
