I realise how frustrating it may be for some, but I was ever so grateful that I could access a message posted in 2003, on joining GR in 2006, as without this one person, I would be absolutely clueless as to where one branch of my family came from. Even though the person concerned was no longer active in searching, a nephew picked up that there was a reply and she immediately joined again to make contact. For me, a three year old message was the best thing ever.

Karen, it is not that we want peeps not to get in contact with the authors of the old threads, more that we want them to PM the author which has more chance of an answer. You were lucky someone saw your reply and were able to get in touch with the author. Many people who maybe would benefit from contact with the original author are not so lucky. If we can teach just one person to go through the right channels and PM the author of an old message and that person makes a valid connection we will have achieved something good.

I know Reggie and the sad part is you cannot blame the person responding as they are normally are so excited about finding someone to talk to about their family.
I have pointed a couple of peeps in the right direction this evening.

I don't think the newer GR members are getting the message. I just looked and somebody has replyed to a thread started in 2003.

hi...

as a 'newbie'..can you help me out with some advice? I was glad to see your post as it taught me something, but also concerned that I could unwittingly annoy somebody due to my lack of experience with forums as I never use them!! So I wonder if you or another community member can help?

I made a post about a week ago and rapidly it fell way down the list...what I'm wondering is

a) how do you keep your posts 'fresh' without annoying the 'old timers' (assuming newbies are at one end and old timers are at the other end of the scale)

and b) about replying to old threads etc...I would hope that if somebody came to this site, say in a year or two's time, they may be able to know that I had been making enquiries and be able to contact me...after all, it has been 34 years that I have been wondering about my birth father, so two or even four years seems quite a short time...I guess your idea of an archive button would be great but in the meantime i've been using the search keyword to get back to my original posing...is this a good technique or is there some way I can save my post and go straight to it??

Thanks for your time....any advice would be greatly appreciated as I could be missing stuff and not even knowing it!

Yours...a useless newbie! (Bonnie)

Hey Bonnie...

Firstly welcome to our lair...i hope you spend many many useful hours finding family members, including your father!!

Your first question is a simple answer.... you need to do just exactly what other members have done here and use 'n' just insert the letter into the reply pane at the bottom of your post and then hit 'post' this will add the 'n' as you can see here... this also then nudges your post to the first page of the board.... depending how busy we are depends how long it stays there!!!

Your secons question is also easy to answer, we are not trying to stop people contacting others who have posted old messages, all we are asking is that you 'pm' (private message, click on their name). This way they are guaranteed to get your message... you have already experienced the pain it is to find your original message, and for those of us who helps others and reply to several a day, we don;t think to check early messages we may have posted. Secondly to find any message you may have posted you need to use the yellow 'top tips' box on the left, the bottom link says 'my threads' click this and it will show you all the messages you have either posted or replied to.

I hope this goes some way to helping you for now....

Please don't hesitate to ask for help, and if you feel more comfortable on this post then please come back here.... unltimately we are here to help each other and to help you help yourself.

Best Wishes

Tracey

Blimey! How many times do we have to nudge this before GR do something? So much time is wasted as a result.
