I need help with my 3x greatgrandfather. He was James Shaw born about 1791 in the Huddersfield area. I thought I'd got him pinned down from another tree as married to a Betty Leach but the more I look at it the more I realise I don't have enough evidence and may be off the mark. What I do know is that I have him in the 1861 census as a widower living with son James (b1820) and his wife Mary nee Baxter in Lockwood/Golcar. I know for certain this is the right family because the boy also there is John Hellawell Shaw my great grandad who like me has Hellawell as a middle name. I would appreciate help in confirming or redirecting me if I have indeed taken the wrong path

Well done Ozi and Pollypoppet
It does tie up but where are all the kids in 1841 and 1851. Okay my James may have left home because I know he gets married to Mary in 1843 and has my great grandad John Shaw Hellawell but where are all the others certainly John 1926 downwards - there is only Alan left - did they all die, which was not unknown for kids in those days.
Also do you think the Betty is a Leach as I originally thought and who are James's (1793) parents

Tomey???
1851 England Census Name: Thomas Shaw Age: 29 Estimated birth year: abt 1822 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Sarah Gender: Male Where born: Longwood, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Stainland With Old Lindley Ecclesiastical parish: St Andrew County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street Address: Lowood Hill
Occupation: Heald and Slay Maker
Registration district: Halifax Sub-registration district: Elland ED, institution, or vessel: 2e Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 117 Household Members: Name Age Thomas Shaw 29 Sarah Shaw 26 Frances Shaw 3 Sarah Ann Shaw 1
Though I'm not sure that this is James & Betty's Tomey as the previous household on the census page is a John & Mary Shaw. John is born Stainland & also a Heald and Slay Maker.
Heald/Heddle or Yell Manufacturer - Manufacturer of Healds, used on looms. The warp yarns are passed through loops known as Healds, which raise and lower the yarns after the shuttle has passed the weft across the width of the loom.
Slaymaker - Made the reeds or slays used in weaving. Slays (wooden pegs) or reeds were used to separate the threads on the loom.

It looks as though it is all fitting together. I know for certain my James marries Mary Baxter because I got John Hellawell's birth certificate handed down to me. And we know Mary is daughter of Joseph and Betty (nee Hellawell). Litltle Ellen must be illigitimate
It looks as though we've got his parents and have tracked 3 of his siblings which I thinks confirms. But we still don't know if his mother Betty is a Leach

Actually it looks as though this also cofirms the original tree I copied on Ancestry which names most of these siblings.
I am now convinced my original inputs are correct afterall. Thanks for all your help

That's great, Harold.
I got called away in the middle of searching for you. Are you happy now, or would you still like the siblings searched for?
As for mother being Betty Leach, I think you'll need to go to parish records for that.
Lancashire Family History Society has Salendine Nook Baptist Church Graveyard Inscriptions A - Z vol 1. Perhaps they have other info.

Australian eh - I'd never have guessed though maybe there was a wee hint in your message board name
My family has along association with Down Under. My dad and grandparents lived in NSW in the 30's and my parents took me and my sister to live in NZ in the fifties.
On that basis I am going to ask you a favour as you are obviously good at this game. I recently posted a thread under the ROBERTS name and could do with the benefit of your experience. Have a look and see if you can help.
They say be careful. Ancestry can throw up unexpected suprises. Well this one rocked my family to the core.
Best regards Harry Bower
