According to a tree on Family Search his father was Thomas and he was born in Chilham. On every other census apart from 1841 when he was working in Kennington he says he was born in Ashford. |

Possibly wrong marriage, from age of child in 1851? |

Marriage looks quite good Patchem, especially Mary Ann Smith - could child belong to Mary Ann pre marriage and have been adopted by William? |

Thank you for all your help guys. This looks helpful, but I'll have to look at it in more detail in about half hour, as I'm just about to serve tea. Will comment further when I have a chance to study further :0) |

Things aren't as clear cut as I hoped! Do you think Frances Grant age 2 is the same Fanny from 1881 census then? If so and the marriage date to Mary Ann is correct, then I suppose it's possible that Frances/Fanny was originally born out of wedlock to William and Mary. |

I have managed to find out from a family connection about the marriage of William and Mary, as they have a copy of the marriage certificate. Thomas is named as the father and Thomas Smith is named as Mary's father. However, I just can not seem to trace him in the census records. I have however found a William living with his mother Sarah in Lambeth Kennington in 1841 census. There was no mention of Thomas. Could this mean he was away or dead by then? If he was dead, then maybe that's why I can't trace him anywhere. Can anyone help out here please? |

Does it say whether Thomas is deceased on the marriage certificate? |

Good thinking - I don't think it does. There goes that theory then. So either he was away or seperated? |

He could still be dead, and just not recorded as such. |

Ok, now I'm really confused :9( I've just been informed that Sarah died and was buried 1833 and Thomas remarried Frances Epps. So I presume the Sarah Grant and son William in 1841 must be someone else. Back to the drawing board I suppose. I now need to find a marriage around 1837. Trouble is unless someone can help me out, it will unfortunately have to wait, because I've now used up all my credits! Thank you for your help with this though Patchem xx |

On the IGI there is an extracted baptism record for Louisa and several submitted records for some of the others that people have added but nothing for William with father Thomas. |

William born 1852 was Baptised William Thomas which gives us the link back to William Senior's father maybe! |
