Find Ancestors

I am trying to find the parents of a JOHN GIBBS i have got a cert fro a birth but in my tree there is no mother mentioned as shes not in the census btu the cert i have got does mention a mother< how do i determin which JOHN GIBBS is the right one as he also has a different named father than the one i have in my tree.

If he married then the cert should name his father,if known .plus hopefully his age is shown ,unless its when the age was put as of full age or minor.
Births pre 1875 may not have been registered so you may not necessarily find a birth cert. Presume you have started where you know the info is correct and worked back .

If there were post 1875 any siblings, then these births would be registered ,so you may have to work around the family to find the right parents

when i was doin the tree i got john of the censusand obviously his brothers and sisters, i sent of for the birth cert and came back with a different dad and a mother was named but in the census i found his dad was also john and no mother so im finding it all a bit confusing as to know which one is right,, iv had another look throuhg the census and i keep comin up with the same info i had before and this one so im no nearer to findin out which one is right, iv also got his death cert and his brother was there when he died so thats no help really

Of course the birth cert names the mother.......ALL full birth certs have the full details of - at least - the child's mother

What was his brothers name?

yes flick i know that but when i look on the census his mother wasn't there but on the cert it was there.

his name is JOHN GIBBS born 1843-1844 in HEREFORDSHIRE, but when i look through the census there are 2 JOHN GIBBS that were born in the same area, in the census one had a dad called JOHN and the cert i have got his dad is called JAMES that is where i am stuck

James Gibbs on the last census I put up is a Printers Bookseller and Stationer.

As explained earlier by Shirley...until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births....so the cert you have is not necessarily the person in your tree.

You really have to work backwards from yourself.................getting certs to verify every generation.........

Also, you must take care to check the registration DISTRICT.......

As is clearly shown above in the census returns, the two boys are in totally different districts within the County
