Wasn't going to look for anything else until the marriage cert. was bought but that all seems to fit nicely, lancashireann. Love it when it all falls into place. Hope the marriage cert. will confirm all this info. Regards Catherine

So does all that mean that what I found for James Conway all looks to be correct, but that the Alice Ann Platt is not the correct one?
The marriage record that you have, gives parents as:- Edward & Annae Platt (nee Richards)
so the 1892 marriage for the parents can't be the correct one as the names are Joshua and Ada?
The only marriage I could find for a couple Edward Platt and ? Richards is this one:- Marriages Dec 1887 (>99%) Bilton Eliza Ashton 8d 708 <<<<PLATT Edward Ashton 8d 708 <<<<RICHARDS Hannah Ashton 8d 708 Warnet Henry Ashton 8d 708
PLATT Edward RICHARDS Hannah Leesfield, St. Thomas Oldham CE227/3/60

could be Hannah for the marriage record as all names are written in latin & fairly hard to read - thought it began with A but maybe that is what they put for Hannah
also found the baptism of Rosa at St Mary's oldham d of Michael & Mary nee Monaghan on 17-7-1887 b 30-6-1887
could not find Sabina or james but not all RC records are here in Preston so could have been at a different church

Had another look at the 1911 census record I found to see who was living with Alice A. Platt and here are the names that came up:- Last names PLATT County Lancashire District Oldham Other person first names ALICE A
HOUSEHOLD PLATT AMELIA F 1898 13 Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT CHARLIE N M 1892 19 Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT EDWARD M 1900 11 Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT EDWARD M 1869 42 Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT EVA F 1911 3 MONTHS Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT FRED M 1911 3 MONTHS Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT HANNAH F 1869 42 Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT JOHN M 1905 6 Oldham Lancashire HOUSEHOLD PLATT JOSHUA M 1902 9 Oldham Lancashire
So we have parents Edward and mother Hannah, and Amelia is also there with brothers Edward and Charles. If only I'd done that in the first place!

Hi Tracy,
Don't know how lancashireann got hold of such detailed records but from what she has found Alice's parents were Edward and Annae Richards. I found a marriage record for Edward Platt to Hannah Richards in Ashton under Lyme, and it would seem that this one is the correct one as the 1891 and 1901 census confirms. Also the 1911 census for Alice A. Platt that I found has her living with this family but it would be worth paying to view this to confirm 100%.
The info for James Conway does seem to have been confirmed by the marriage record.
regards Catherine

Conway family in 1891:-

Occupation: Police Constable
Registration district: Oldham Sub-registration district: Oldham Above Town ED, institution, or vessel: 19 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Michael Conway 27 Mary Conway 28 born: Ireland Rose Conway 3 born: Oldham, Lancashire Sabina Conway 11/12 Peter Conway 25 - Ireland - boarder Patrick Conway 23 - Ireland - boarder Michael Monogan 19 - Ireland - boarder Margaret Hogan 18 - Ireland - Visitor
The Michael Monogan is possibly Mary's brother. and also Peter and Patrick Conway, could well be brothers of Michael?

the details are available in the parish registers , a copy of the appropriate years is held in Preston at Lancs CRO where I have just spent the day (sent the posts from there as I found things)
The one thing I could not find was any record of Michael Conway in Lancs police, which is a shame as the police records give such details as physical appearance, when married, retired, pension, promotions etc. He is described as a police officer in the census but maybe he was retired or belonged to a borough force, rather than Lancs police.

I could not find Michael in 1881 so maybe at that point he was a policeman in Dublin and carried on as a policeman when he came to England
