He doesn't seem to appear in the 1911 census..........so possibly travelled between 1901 and 1911...... |

Just had a check of a tree on Ancestry which has the family and it seems there were 2 sons named Richard (1907) and Thomas (1904) they also have an Alice May born 1911 died 1982. There is no information about when the family travelled |

Here is the family in 1911. William isn't there so maybe he travelled before the family. |

Thank you so much for all your information. We know about Elizabeth and the four children. Our mother was Alice May, who Elizabeth gave to Edward and Elizabeth (Minnie) Whitfield in June 1911 before she and the other children sailed to Wellington in February 1912. Not only is William Henry not on the 1911 census he is not on my mother's birth certificate either. We know he died in New Zealand in 1941 (1946 was a mistake by GR). He worked as a coal porter in the London Docks until at least 1908 when he registered the birth of Richard but that's when the trail goes cold. |

I had an inkling when I was researching it yesterday that Alice May was left behind because she may not have been William's daughter. She lives, marries and dies in England. But where was William? How did he get to New Zealand. Was he already there when the family went or did he catch up with them later? |

sorry for duplication. after a year of illness I tried to resume my search but GR had changed it's layout so couldn't find old info. The new thread was put on by a GR adviser at the "Who do you think you are" exhib at Olympia on Sunday. Alice May's birth was registered by Elizabeth Quick(e) in April 1911 (all the other children were registered by William Henry). Maybe he worked on ships to Oz/NZ from Port of London - not all crew had merchant seaman tickets and passports were not required for Brits travelling to the "colonies".so that avenue is very difficult to research. We assume he went ahead and sent the money for E and the children to travel. Maybe he didn't know she was expecting when he left so she left his name of Alice's birth cert, maybe he wasn't the father.... |
