I was thinking an army connection too. It would explain the childrens' various places of birth. Woolwich is very much an army town and they were dependent on horses. He also might not have been a soldier but grooms were needed for the horses. |

Sometimes people use a different first name or are called by a different name: just in case - in 1881 there is a John Vick b Woolwich about 1852, private soldier, "Fourth (Q.D.) Hussars", Aldershot, Hampshire. |

For interest, there is a James Edward Vick in London electoral registers in 6 Mazzard Row. Camberwell North Ward, in 1914 and 1915. |

James born approx 1850 - in 1861 census living with family in winterbourne in wiltshire then no record of him until the 1901 census when he's the head of the family living in camberwell, aged 48-51. Can't find him 1871, 1881, 1891. |
