I do understand PRIVACY, I also understand SHARING. I have also spent a lot of time and money researching and have no objection to asking for permission, but when you are told there are 54 options without cross reference eg. mother/father or spouse names, how would I know if it is in fact a connection ? I would need to reply to each one & ask. Most people guard their knowledge & don't reply, this is shortsighted because I may be able to fill you in with something you don't know. Through my searching I have discovered distant cousins I never knew I had, confirmed with old family photos exchanged between us . One in particular thought that his GG mother's sister had died, but she had in fact come to South Africa and was my Grandmother. I have also been able to give him other information about the family that he did not have and was delighted to receive.
I have found a lot of my information (backed up with proof) from hard searching in the 1861-1911 census, however, strangely enough I have checked in Genes Reunited and come up with "no matches found", hence my complaint.

Much of the info in public trees on Ancestry is absolutely worthless...................very few people who put their trees on there have done any proper research

If you plan to rely only on info provided by other people, you are missing out on the best part of FH - doing it yourself.

You should have found out what this site offered before paying for membership - that would have been the most sensible course of action

Most other sites have trees open to public view unless the tree owner makes it private and most people who don't make their tree private on those sites don't actualy realise that they are open to anyone,

Whereas it is GR's default setting for trees to be private and only open to selected members on invitation only, The advantage is that the tree owner can keep control over the info in their tree and who has got access, A good thing when people have living relatives in their tree who could be vulnerable to scammers and the like and as Sylvia has said GR has by far the best help via the community boards than any other site.

Its not the fault of GR that you never read what was available per subscription package and the T&C's before you subscribed

What a pity that you do not understand PRIVACY

I also have my tree on another site .......................... and it is NOT Public.

I hate people taking information that I have worked very hard to find, without mu knowledge.

Most people on here love the idea of making contact with others who have their trees.

It is after all only polite to ask permission to see and take information.

This has been the way this site has operated.

Don't forget that much of the information you find and take from trees on that other site is completely unproven, and often undocumented!

The real value of this site is if you take out the Standard membership ................ you can still search trees and contact people, but the members offer invaluable advice and help on these Community Boards, especially on Find Ancestors and Genealogy Chat.

That, I believe, is not something that you get on that other site.

I am very dissapointed with the information on genesreunited site. I have been doing family research on another site and I have found out an amazing lot of information, but I decided to come to this site to see if I could fill in the missing gaps, what a mistake. I am particularly interested in other family trees, but if I put in the name of the person I am researching, I am told there are 54 trees, but I cannot see any info on them I must send an email to each to find out if it is connected. This is an absolute waste of time. In other sites you can go into each one if they are public (which most are) and find out lots of information. Genesreunited is far more expensive and not worth the money. I will definitely not be renewing my subscription. :-(
