I have renewed my membership after a break from f.tree research. I used to also have Ancestry membership and used them to trawl enumeration districts in the censuses, so I don't know if this could have been done on GR. This was a valuable resource to me as I have connections with many farms in Derbyshire/Staffs but often needed to clarify who was running them to see how they tied into my tree. (E.g. I have an undated newspaper cutting obit for a Thos Wm White from Hollies Farm, Allestree. From names of funeral attendees he is clearly a close relative but I cannot place him on my extensive tree without finding who was at the farm and when.) Can I do this using GR? If so, it is not clear how. If not, could this not be provided, please?

GRU does not really offer any way to search by E.D. It does have a handy facility in the search census index - both the birth place and current residence of the people are shown in a very usable way. Along with the other data this can be used to disentangle extended families.

GR did not transcribe the records or censuses they carry ........ they have obtained them from findmypast, which is in the same stable of companies.


so any changes to the records will probably have to be done by the other company.


A lot of the searches that are possible on other sites may not be possible on here.

You can search by address on FMP, which is the source of GR's census records

Thos Wm White's obituary was in the Derby Telegraph on 26 Feb. 1920.

This gives you a date, which might help. The info. came from the Newspaper Archives Search above. I only have Standard membership so cannot read the whole article. (If it's a different newspaper from yours it may have more details about who was who).

Thank you both very much indeed.

Should you be interested, you've confirmed my conundrum exists - Wm Thos who died 22.2.1920 (from the Spanish flu epidemic which followed WW1) was my grandfather. This would lead me to believe that Thos Wm White who died in time for his obit on 26.2.1920 simply had his first names transposed by accident - apart from the fact that g/father farmed Finger Farm, Kegworth and Thos White, according to the paper, farmed Hollies Farm, Allestree. In his obit, wife and children are not named, only siblings and parents, but this fits with g/father's siblings' and parents' names. I'm reasonably confident that he only had one farm, so you can see why I'll be keen to find out more about Hollies farm. (Mind you, in 1911 he was on his future father in law's census return, at a different farm entirely! ) Guess it'd be boring if everything was too easy...

His wife, Annie Maria, is mentioned in the obit ? Married Annie Maria Garratt in 1911 ?

Do you have your grandfather's death certificate? This would tell you where he died and also his home address, if different.

According to the 1916 Kelly's directory, Finger Farm, Diseworth, was farmed by a Frederick Morris.

Thank you both for the information and advice. I have the d cert for grandfather William Thos White (yes, Annie Maria was my grandmother) and he was from Hollies Farm. Clearly the obit in the Derby Telegraph just transposed his forenames and, at some point, he and his family had moved from Finger Farm to Hollies Farm.
I'm really pleased to have tied up the loose ends, so thanks again.
