Holy support?

I don't think GR require Divine intervention just yet.

Hi all

I have just renewed as well....

Have not looked at my tree for ages, but could not proceed with some of my research without the help of various people from the 'boards' ... and I am very gratefull for this help.

I love reading the boards, and have picked up a number of hints/tips..... Keep up the good work.

Cheers
Karen of Brisbane :-) :-)

the heaviest block of wood I can find is on its way over to Wales ...... and I hope it finds you!

I do not appreciate your jocularity when I ask you to change the way in which you address me.

Please be respectful to your elders :-D

EDIT:- this was posted in response to a post from John, which he has since deleted

Sylvia You are nowt but a young girl trying to make out you are mature. Now that we have no coal in these valleys, I thank you for your expected present. When I am warm this winter, I will always think of you. Have you got my address. And have you got my number?

I am only being sarcastic when I am not being funny. I agree sarcasm is the lowest form of wit and the refuge of a scoundrel. Though I suspect I make you giggle now and again. You are making an old man very happy anyway with your thrusts and parries:-D :-D :-D

John

you have deleted at least 2 posts on here ............. which makes my responses sound idiotic.

Not funny ...... and not appreciated by most members on this site.

It's just not on to delete postings

I am going to start keeping copies of what you post, and to which I have responded. Then I can prove that you make rather nasty comments at times.

There is an expression in my language too. Malu awyr (lit: mix the air) is the politer version ;-) ;-) But merde is involved in the less polite one ;-)

Well I like the new tree not that I use it a great deal.

I enjoy reading and participating on the boards so I'm staying.

If that was in English, it would be RR'd :-D

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 4 Sep 2012 11:13

Perhaps I ought to remove it, Detective. But might get RR's for removing it. :-D

I think Sylvia and Jax have proved to any reasonably minded person that I am horrible and hateful. Have even admitted that to them on one thread and said they had found me out and trounced me. Only a bit of my brush left now.

This thread would make more sense if, when I removed a flaming post, they would also remove theirs. As otherwise their anger hangs impotently in their virtual world :-D :-D

John - I meant Rollo's comments in French.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 4 Sep 2012 11:38

Detective Not brilliant at French, but I think my Welsh comments may have been ditto. :-D :-D Lot of similarities between two languages and cultures. So I assumed you were making your friendly comment to me as well as Rollo.

Haven't been RR'd since first day on these boards. No idea why to this day - but am looking forward to my next RR'ing. Makes the eyes water, but you join the elite club and rise to a higher plane. :-D

it just does not work that way ...................

you make a flaming post aimed at a certain person or persons, with the desire of getting a similar response back.

You get the response, and then delete the original post ........... aiming to make the others look stupid.

WE leave our posts up to show that there is something going on, and also to warn others that you are not the sweet gentleman you are pretending to be ........... that you have a somewhat mean and nasty side to you.

You can remove all the posts you like that you have made. I will not remove any response that I may have made to them.

nah, I don't think so :-D :-D :-D :-D

JustJohn Report 4 Sep 2012 20:45

Sylvia In real life, I believe in this maxim:

1. If you are upset by someone, write to them and discuss what they actually meant. Very often, that resolves the upset.
2. If you are still upset, discuss it with your closest friends first.
3. Only send an angry post to the community when you have failed to resolve it by 1 or 2.

I think this is the problem of this sort of chatting. It is very quick and once someone has got the wrong end of the stick, the argument flames up like a forest fire.

I do like a warm debate. I honestly do not dislike anyone on here at all. I always see the positive side , and everybody has strengths and weaknesses. I have enjoyed most of my intercourse, which has been very stimulating at times. And I have even enjoyed disagreeing with some posters. SueMaid and I had a good old biff-baff last night but feel we both resolved our differences amicably.

But I have often thought this last month "I am getting cross. Must send something back that reacts to that person immediately". And it escalates. Probably I am too slow and old for this type of instant debate, and I certainly don't think there is much encouragement to continue on here.

And I still have no idea about these emoticons. Posts sometimes threaten me with physical harm and there is a smiley face. I take that as a smile, but is it always?

:-)

stop calling yourself old

you are not old

There are many many more posting on these Boards who are older than you .......... including ME

I'm not old enough to be your mother ...... but I am old enough to have been your big sister ..........

............. the one who ordered you around :-D :-D :-D :-D

and, yes, you are quite correct .............. the advent of the internet, emails, and posting on sites such as this have led to a proliferation of "angry" postings.

It's because it is impossible to see the body language of the poster .......... that twinkle in the eye, twitch of the lips, shrug of the shoulder ................ all very slight, but telling the other person(s) that "I am only joking"

For example .............. a lot of witty comments come across only as being snarky or sarcastic, or plain nasty.

The emoticon???

The addition of a smile or grin face to what might be seen as a threat (eg, my sending the cedar plank over to you) ....... is used to indicate "I'm only joking here"

In other words, it's mimicking the "body language".

The omission of an emoticon indicates you are serious about what you have said, and possibly could mean your threat.

sylvia

ps .......... my sending over a cedar plank is part of a long-running joke on this site!

Well, I'll be staying because the old tree was sooooo easy to use (which is why I joined in the first place) and I just hope that GR will let us have something similar to use in the future in place of this deadful thing that we currently have which won't do half what the old one did.

I've spent most evenings for the past 7 years compiling my tree (which now has over 28,500 names on it) - until the past month, when I've added practically nothing and where upper case has been automatically converted to lower case, where the save button is practically inaccessible, where I can't copy individuals in my tree, where I can't delete individuals, where I can't simply drag and drop text from other windows into the Notes field.... need I go on? :-(
