We have Chris looking into the MyThreads issue right now. The issue we are experiencing is primarily with members who use the boards heavily and as a result the number of threads participated in is quite large. That is great, don't let me encourage less use. However, we are looking at how we store this information, and testing some changes just now. Hopefully if all goes well we can get a solution deployed fairly soon.

Opening My Threads is still a continuing problem

In desperation, I sit here and constantly click on My Threads, at 2-5 second intervals.

This seems to stop it timing out, and usually, eventually, results in it opening ................. after at least 50-60 seconds.

If I leave it ..... it almost invariably (90-95% of the time) results in the Error message.

.............. and don't even think of trying to refresh the page while on the index page of My Threads ..... that always gives the purple message.

deep, deep sigh

When is this problem going to looked at ?

Yes the submit button has been a problem for a while now but that is not getting fixed either.

All I want is a good basic site that works

It is often thought that "the team" do not read these boards. They do. Pretty well any organisation these days pays close attention to anything about their product, good or bad.

"Moaning" can mean making a shin dig about something inevitable such as the rain on Test match days. It can also mean a determination to get something done, even if other people get bored with the matter 'cos it does not affect them. IMHO GlitterBaby's gritty determination is positive. After all she has only created all those threads through being one of the helpers of whom GRU makes so much in their publicity!

Moreover the technical challenge of fixing the problem is low.

I wish the map feature worked in the new view, it still works in the old view. I haven't "moaned" about it. Nothing happened.

I don't care about print but some sort of print eg 5 generations should not be too hard. Few people moan about the lack of print. Nothing happens (except great surprise from new members)..

I wish they would just can the "new view" - which is not really new but a rehash of the "old view" and start again from basic principles. Since the old view came back moaning about the buggy new view has fallen right away. Progress on fixing the bugs appears to have stopped.

Wishing or moaning it looks like "TheTeam" have other fish to fry.

In any case it is fairly obvious that "moaning" pays as GenesRU have taken action to try and fix the MyThreads problem and one assumes it is now working for many. Or maybe they don't moan...

So got for it GlitterBaby and don't let the apologists for several months of software shambles bring you down.

fwiw every time I try to contact Customer Support I get a little purple box instead of a send button. When I press the button instead of the message being sent the page crashes and I am told to hit the back button. Yeah, right.

Already asked for some feedback from The Team as to what they are working on but fallen on deaf ears.

"ErrorSorry. An error has occurredThe page you were trying to load has experienced an error. This error has been logged and will be investigated."

So how many times does an error message have to be logged before The Team take the problem seriously ? Hundreds !! Thousands !!

All the time there is an error message then I will continue to post about them
:-P

My apologies, Rollo, I read it wrong.
But if do not stop moaning=fix will never happen.
Then:
Do stop moaning= fix will happen?

InspectorGreenPen Report 14 Mar 2012 17:30

Rollo, as ever I don't disagree with your suggestions, but surely posting the GR error message "Sorry. An error has occurred. The page you were trying to load has experienced an error. This error has been logged and will be investigated. etc etc ! day after day, after....is more likely to be counter productive?

Surely a better way might be for members who are experiencing problems to report the exact circumstances and actions leading up to the error to the support team?

This is the way that we used to operate when I worked as a business support manager and it got far better co-operation from the techie guys than simply complaining it was broke.

PS I'm not 'having a go' at anyone either, I just think there are better ways to go about it..

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 14 Mar 2012 17:26

?

I am not accusing GlitterBaby of moaning at all, far from it.

I pointed out that (a) the problem can be fixed fairly easily and (b) that if GlitterBaby does not keep on moaning then the problem will just be swept under the carpet.

It is IGP who was not happy with GlitterBaby repeat postings on the matter, not y.t.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 14 Mar 2012 17:14

Oh, how nasty, Rollo, to accuse Glitter Baby and others of moaning! They are simply letting the team know that "My Threads" is still not working. And how could their so-called moaning stop the fix from happening?

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 14 Mar 2012 17:00

The problem is that the client request causes the server to send back ALL of the users threads as html code. As IGP points out this is pretty well certain to cause a time out.

The problem though is not with the server capacity which you know, serves but the client capacity to receive thousands of lines of html. Ever seen the pie eating contest in the movie "Stand By Me" ? Well the poor browser is in the role of pie eater.

The fix is really easy. The thread request just needs to be changed to return the last 100 threads (say) and then give options after that eg next 100 and so on or by date. In any case the request should return "too large" if the data set is too big - at a guess 1 000 threads should always work. FreeBMDlimits the size of the returned data set in this way and even adjusts the limit according to current load on the server.

If GlitterBaby and others do not stop moaning then the fix will never ever happen.

I cant see the point of posting this on here every day.

The option DOES NOT WORK for members who have large numbers of thread postings, nor is it suddenly going to start working again as if by magic.

It isn't just My Threads that isn't working either- it is a site wide problem that GR only just seem to have acknowledged and it affects all members who are trying to process a database request which involves large amounts of data.

In fact the more postings you add the worse things get.....!

What would be nice if GR gave weekly reports regarding all the issues and problems they are working on with some idea on how long before we can expect a result.

I also use My Threads constantly ......... and for the same reason as you!

getting a pm that says "you have the correct Thomas" or "can you tell me any more about Thomas" tells me nothing ............. and I have to try to find a thread that I have posted on that might connect up with a Thomas!
