Proper board moderating works well in all other forum sites that I visit; to name just two:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php

I would urge Bright Solid to look at other forum sites to see the functioning of proper moderating.

Cynthia Report 6 Jan 2012 09:03

At the risk of being 'struck down', I like the way Rootschat is moderated. If a person violates the Ts and Cs, the offending material is deleted by a moderator and the explanation as to why is printed in red. The explanation is grammatically correct and polite so no-one could take offence at it. It shows that 'personal' touch which is so much appreciated by the members.

I have a feeling that Phil may be away from work (a message sent to him two days ago looks unopened).

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jan 2012 23:01

Good idea, Jeremy

that should be possible

...... especially if the "offending" bit is just, say, an email address, or a birth date for a possibly living person, but the rest of the post is OK

JerryH Report 5 Jan 2012 22:50

I think I would go further than that Sylvia.

I would like to see the opportunity given for the transgresser to edit their post to remove anything that Genes should consider unsuitable (after they have carefully reviewed the Post)

Surely it would be possible for the offending post to be (say) printed in a different colour (for the original poster's eyes only) or moved to a special Board accessed by link so that this could be achieved.

IF, then the post is still deemed to be unsuitable after edit, it could then be deleted by Genes

This is what I have suggested to GR

"There MUST be some way in which GR can improve the way in which it moderates the site.

Most essential is an improvement in the information sent to people who had posts removed .... including noting WHICH post was removed, from WHICH thread, and THE REASON WHY.

The nasty, rude impersonal pm sent to people was completely unnecessary in my opinion.

I have no idea how many postings are RR'd every day ....... but it seems to my simplistic mind that good customer service would demand that a GR staff member should actually read any such posts before hitting the remove key on the word of one, or even 20, complainers."

I think you are quite correct in your summing up, Jonesey :-)

Jonesey Report 5 Jan 2012 21:10

By what is being reported by members about the content of the emails that they are getting from GR staff it strikes me as if GR has dug itself into a hole which is getting deeper by the hour.

One thing that is certain is that either the referral for review system or the staff applying it is/are flawed. At this point in time I am not sure which, perhaps both. Judging by the variety of responses from the GR staff dealing with the aftermath of the deletions it certainly appears as if they are making things up as they go along.

Thank you Jeremy

I am of course living dangerously, yet again

..... but I too was stunned by the reply!

and I also cannot see how GR can receive multiple reports if the post has disappeared ....... unless the RR "button" still remains active. In which case, one could RR a post that is not visible :-S

but wouldn't you think that GR could tell from the time that a RR is sent in, that it was being sent after the post had already been deleted?

JerryH Report 5 Jan 2012 20:29

Thank you Sylvia

I am stunned!

I sincerely hope that Genes have had the decency to write to each member affected with an apology.

I quite agree the the Report mechanism does need an urgent rewrite and that we need some sort of assurance that this situation cannot be allowed to happen again.

I can well understand Phil not wishing to respond. He is responsible for the Technical side of the business and any opinions he could offer would be his own rather than that of GR

How on earth does GR receive multiple reports if the post disappears the moment the report button is pressed?

jax

jax Report 5 Jan 2012 19:23

So do you reckon Genes are still using the same standard letter from a year or so ago? Multiple reports???? how???? unless of course it is more than one report on a thread?

This is hard to believe! What kind of people are running this site? For the sake of "Being seen to take action" they sent threatening hurtful messages to long standing well loved members who are some of the most competent researchers on this site. All for the sake of looking good in the eyes of the idiot or idiots who are doing thr RR'ing!

Joy

Joy Report 5 Jan 2012 19:08

" In hindsight some posts were removed that shouldn't have been" - I thought I read genes reunited staff posting recently that all reports were read very carefully before action being taken?

:-|

Obviously now incorrectly, I had thought that a post or a thread could only be reported the once?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jan 2012 18:53

I have to say that I am extremely disappointed that Phil has not seen fit to make any comment on a thread that is directed to him for answer.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jan 2012 18:52

Hi all

I sent an email to GR re the distress regarding the posts removed over Monday night as well as the removal of my thread "Careful Folks".

That was sent at approximately 6:00 pm UK time (or 10:00 am my time) yesterday (Jan 4).

I have just picked up the response, sent at 4:05 am UK time (and thus within the 24 hour period mentioned by Estelle :-D ):-

Dear Sylvia,

Thank you for your email,

We recieved multiple reports of some posts on the message boards so had to be seen to be taking action. In hindsight some posts were removed that shouldn't have been and for this we do apologise for any distress caused.

Kind Regards,

------------

They HAD TO BE SEEN TO BE TAKING SOME ACTION!!!

I have responded asking if my thread and other pOSts can be re-instated if they were removed in error

...... and suggesting that major changes be made in the RR process, including having a real live GR staff member read ALL posts requested for review before removing them.

That just about sums it all up doesn't it LadyKira? Smacks of 'don't do as I do, do as I say' !!!

LadyKira Report 5 Jan 2012 14:50

A GR team member has a tree somewhere else and was quite happy to have links amd records from somewhere else posted on her thread to aid her research.

VIVinHERTS

VIVinHERTS Report 5 Jan 2012 14:05

I'm sure it was Phil that I and another long standing member spoke to at the last WDYTYA exhibition on the Genes Reunited stand. We talked about lots of gripes that many members had and he said he would be looking at ways to improve the site and make it easier to use and was always happy to get feedback from members.
Nothing seems to have changed except that the disregard for paying members has escalated.

I am very disappointed in the way this site has gone. I have been a member since 2003 and feel that all the present company thinks about is profit. I do not use the records on this site - I have had subscriptions to other sites which held the records I was interested in. You cannot find all the records on one site alone - GR please take note!

The members on this site help each other - that was why it was set up originally, for everyone to help each other and we all used other sites to get the records to help others - we still do!
May I also remind GR that members don't 'play' at researching , we do it properly. We record where the information comes from, when and where including websites etc....

I think this site has become a joke. The management have no respect for the members and do not seem in anyway interested in them or ways to make things better.

jax

jax Report 5 Jan 2012 13:50

When a post is reported it comes up with "Request review" so how would anyone else know what it said if it has gone?

The old system you could and the poster was not aware until it was whooshed (I think)

JerryH

JerryH Report 5 Jan 2012 13:45

Jax

I am wondering if that is true. Estelle mentioned that it takes multiple reports to get Genss to take action
And in the reply to RamblingRose we had this statement:

"If we receive multiple reports about the same post then we will take action"

That is what prompted my question.

Just trying to do a little bit of "out of the box" thinking and ask the question. Who benefits from all this?
Certainly not us, nor Genes.
:-)
