GR to be able to edit rather than remove

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I noticed today a thread had been reported, because a date of birth was mentioned I guess.

Now why should a whole thread disapear because of one date?

This person is quite new to using the boards and to be honest if it was me I would think twice about ever posting again

Good point Jax and I agree that GR should be able to edit threads.

Also if GR edits a thread then the thread should have an edited by GR and the date on the bottom so we know they have looked at it.

I belong to a couple of forums here in Australia and if a moderator edits a thread there is a message at the bottom that the thread has been edited and by which moderator.

I agree too. It would also be good if it was mentioned as to why an edit took place.

It looks as though some members are being slightly officious in RRing things.

As there are no moderators I do not think the solution is to just whooosh the whole thread, when a lot of work has gone into it, and hopefully the poster would return when he had got copies of certs ect.

What would happen if he started another thread about this family in a couple of weeks? someone would bound to say where has your other thread gone??? not knowing that it had been whooshed, because GR could not edit out a date of birth...which is all that is needed

When I typed my response Jax, I did so with tongue in cheek knowing full well that it would require moderators and that is something GR will never do.

Why would they need moderators when they have so many members to do the job for them.

Phil can amend a title on here belonging to someone else so why can't the person who reviews the reported thread just take out the offending date ect??

That way the thread is not lost forever making the poster and any other persons who happened to spend time trying to help, very ###### off.

I totally agree with you.

Now wouldn't it be great if Phil or Estelle could give us their thoughts.

I also totally agree with you, jax.

The poor guy is new to posting on the Boards, and only worked out yesterday how to do an edit, and remove the birth year and his address ...... the reason presumably why someone R&R'd the thread.

Why is it that no one admits to it either?

I cannot understand why anyone would do that when there were 20+ replies and the poster could quite easily come back and edit...its not the end of the world you just need to see what is posted on facebook

I would be against anyone other than the original poster being allowed to edit.

I think it would be quite within reason for GR to edit any date or data which is against policy rules and to explain the reason as to why they have done it.

I have seen it happen on Rootschat with the editing printed in red.

No offence is taken there.

This is the only forum I use where you can edit yourself, Quite often see, (Filtered word) or (content removed by modorator) in the place of something that should not be there.

So you do not think anyone else should edit your threads IGP...but its ok for them to remove the whole thing ???

"Rootschat (which has moderators) is able to delete any offending message/reply in a thread without deleting the whole thread so why can Genes not do this." - genes reunited have done this, in my experience, in the past.

I see the thread in question is still under review

Genes staff must have finished for christmas :-)

Joy

you are quite right, they were indeed able to remove messages within a thread without removing the whole thread.

I know this personally ..................... about 3 years ago, I reported messages within threads a couple of times (on Chat), and only the messages were removed.

Plus it also happened to me ........ still don't know why, but I had some messages R&R'd within threads, and they went but the threads remained.

jax Report 21 Dec 2011 22:21

Yes Sylvia they can remove just a post within in the thread, but when it is the first post that is reported the whole thread will go

jax

True

I thought that they were supposed to look at Reported threads within 24 hours ...... except at weekends, of course.

That thread was reported at least 2 days ago.

Jax, correct, yes that is what I said. I would be against anyone other than the original poster being allowed to edit. If the post has broken the site T's and C's then it should be removed in its entirety.

Partial editing of the wording within a post could actually lead to more problems than it is trying to solve.

I must admit to liking the way Rootschat use moderators. They give fair warning in their T. & C.'s that posts may be edited:

The Rootschat moderators reserve the right to delete or edit posts that we believe may contain information that could be misused to the detriment of the subject.

The moderators will delete personal data. Please use the Personal Messages (PM) system for exchanging personal data.

Please do not quote Personal Messages (PM) in your replies to topics.
As the name says, Personal Messages (PM) are personal and private !
Replies containing such quotes will be deleted by the moderators.

If a deletion occurs, an explanation as to why is printed in red. I find that quite acceptable.
