I also have 80 credits showing in the green bar (the one above the very dark green bar), following where it says what my membership status is.

I've had 50 credits showing there for months

Once thought I might try using them, if only to see how good the records were on here .............. only to be told I didn't really have 50 free credits, but could pay £5 to buy 50

I clicked on that again last week after getting the 30 free credits .......... and am still told only that I can buy 50 credits for £5

Like most of us, I pay only for Standard membership, and use ancestry (and possibly soon fmp) for accessing records ...... plus the free sites of course.

I also pay for one year ..... but change my membership from the automatic Continuous to Single because I do not want GR to automatically charge my credit card.

That's because we have had credit cards stolen or used without our knowledge, and new cards with new numbers issued, and also, I'm never quite certain which card I'm going to use.

I have always renewed on time

I have been charged £9.95 for the last few years .... I think it was ITV who put it up, so that dates back to about 2007.

BUT I have also received discounts, bringing the cost down to £7.50

I am in Canada, but now list myself as being in the UK on my account ................. that was after GR charged me in US dollars earlier this year.

Apparently, foreign members were to be charged in the currency of their country, when available. Canada wasn't, but it is next to the US, so ...................

I complained, ended up in a real mess with GR, which took days to correct.

I was at one point treated as a new member, but have been assured that this has been corrected, and should not make any difference next year.

That is, so long as I show my place of residence to be the UK.

I did end up paying £7.50 for one year in the end, and that was April/May time.

There is also the fact that BrightSolid offered a loyalty discount of 20% when they finally got control of GR last year (???around August?).

The initial implication was that it would apply to the next renewal for all current members

.................... but it seemed to come to an end in January or February this year, because that is when the first complaints began to appear, and the response was that in fact the loyalty discount had only been intended for 6 months.

Can I also say that I paid £7.50 last April, as I have for several years and I know of at least one other who paid the same. I am in UK and have been a continuous member on the same Credit card since 2003.

Margee, my guess would be maybe the phantom RR'er hadn't noticed Fanny's post? Seems a bit goody two shoes.

I've been charged £9+ for a few years so no, it didn't go up in April.
I'll have to check the exact amount as 20% vat on £7 would make it £9 and I'm sure it's more than that.

Maybe it's all down to whether there's an R in the month?

Well at least you got a reply :-D

More than I ever got when asked why, but that was in the day when it was whooshed without knowing someone had reported it before hand

This was my message to GR, written before the thread was deleted but after it was rquested for review:

"Subject : Feedback
Could you explain to me why my post on the Genealogy Chat board entitled "30 Free Credits" has been requested for review?
Margaret"

And this was their response:

"Dear Margaret

Thank you for your email.

This has been requested for review by another member.

It will be removed, as we sent emails to all those affected by the site perfomance issues, and this shouldn't be copied onto the boards.

Kind Regards,

Laura
Genes Reunited Support Team"

I suppose I'm going to be in trouble again for posting it on the boards!

jax

jax Report 3 Nov 2011 13:22

Did they tell you that was the reason Margee? Normally you just get a standard message, whether you report one or have one reported.

It seems to me that depending on who is on duty that day, whether it is read or not before being whooshed

I have to agree, Island, no rhyme or reason. I could understand getting a small discount for continuous membership but some of us are paying less than half of what others are.

BTW, mine was renewed in April for 7.50. Has it perhaps gone up since then?

Another no rhyme or reason complaint I have is that GR deleted my thread because I had posted the email that was sent to me. Fanny has posted exactly the same email and it's been allowed to stay. Why?

Island

Island Report 3 Nov 2011 11:30

I'm in the UK and pay continuous sub too but it was put up to £9+ from £7.50 some time ago Cynthia :-0

There's no rhyme or reason with GR - I understand the 'loyalty' thing but why the difference between long standing members subs? random discounts on subs rears it's head now and again with untruths as to why and now two versions as to why free credits! :-0 :-0 :-S :-S (sorry Margee but I am most puzzled)

Oh well, a tenner a year doesn't break the bank but if they behaved this way for a higher sub they would have less members.

Don't worry Margee - I know my place. :-D

I'm not going to respond to that, Cynthia, or I'll end up in the doghouse with you.

Of course the teacher was right Margee - don't know how you could have doubt it.... ;-)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 1 Nov 2011 20:54

So, you're in the UK, Cynthia? That means I should be getting it even cheaper. I shouldn't have to pay VAT.

Oh, Fanny, you used that awful emoticon, not once but 4 times! Maybe that teacher was right, many years ago.

I'm in the UK but my membership is automatically renewed like Margee's.

You've hit 50 Fans??? I though you batted that out of the window a long time ago and were heading for the big 60 or was that 70? :-P

All of us who do not want their 30 credits could pool them and set up a scholarship to be paid to the GR newbie who needs the most assistance.

No don't ask me how it would be awarded. I'm an idea's person not a facilitator.

I too have 80 credits noted above the dark green bar. I wondered if I have to pay for the 50 in order to access the free 30. My subs changed this time round from 6 monthly to 12 montly subs. When I look in my account it says I have 80 credits and says nothing about paying for the 50.

This is all very confusing.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 1 Nov 2011 14:14

I have paid on continuous since joining and because I forgot to update my card a couple of years back and they couldnt get my money there and then they upped the sub...My fault really, but still a little mean for a slip of the memory like wot us "middle aged"people start to get after hitting the big 50..But never mind as I now have 3 days extra for free....!

Jonesey
After seeing a pic of your supposed pad I think it will be more use to put your 16p in my charity box as no way would a one bar lecy fire heat that Mausoleum.. :-P

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 1 Nov 2011 11:53

I opted for continuous membership years ago at the cheaper rate. They automatically renew my sub every year. Mind you they advise me beforehand that it is due and they will be renewing.

Yes I am in Canada but what I pay is not affected by exchange rate, it's 7.50 pounds sterling. What I pay in Canadian dollars does change. It could be that I don't pay VAT because I'm not in the country. Not sure.
