are you doubting me?
I don't appreciate that!
For your information and education ....................................
I was not talking about a "consumer computer" ....... but one in a university.
"The first electronic digital computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). Originally, they were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs).[1] In this era mechanical analog computers were used for military applications."
The one I had access to in 1963/4 all but filled a wall about 8' long by 8-10' high
......... and took at least 24 hours, and often longer, to spit out its analyses.
It was used to produce analyses of results from experiments or questionnaires ............ for example one of its first usages was analysing results of investigations into smoking, and into the occurrence of multiple Downs births to mothers under 35.
It certainly wasn't used as a word processor or for the internet ............... which wasn't available quite as early as that.
.............. but it depended on software developers writing programmes that would analyse the results
............. and, of course, on the researchers entering the information in the correct way ....... or GIGO would be the result
The next computer I had access to was in 1969. The Main Frame Computer and its ancillary services occupied most of one BUILDING on the university campus One had to fill out forms, information from these forms was keypunched on Fortran cards by data entry clerks, and then those cards were used to enter the information into the Main Frame. The end user got access to only a printout. Plus also getting the Fortran cards back to store in their own offices.
As the 70s progressed, we began to get monitors in our offices, connected up to the Main Frame ................ one could enter information from these distant terminals, but for years could only get information out in the form of printouts.
I didn't get my first PC at the university until about 1993/4 ......... and that is when all connection with the main frame, in its many versions, was finally severed.
I've worked closely with software developers since my department insisted on having its own programmes written for it (rather than using an existing programme) in about 1975.
so I think I can very honestly say that I have been an end user of computers since 1963/4
sylvia
in case you didn't know .........
GIGO = garbage in, garbage out :-D

Joy, I'm sure I saw somewhere that the Watched button isn't working. Back in the Autumn I think it was. If so, it would be better if GR removed it.

Seriously, the error issues, logging in, lack of speed, and other problems raised over, as Phil posted, well over 12 months now, is not acceptable service.

Watched thread "sort of" work for me.
At least, if I tick them then they appear under "My watched threads"
HOWEVER, I do not get any email messages to tell me when they have been added to so seems little point in having it :-( :-(
Not good enough Genes!
And I had a very curious email on 11th January telling me that I had unread messages in my Genes Inbox. There were none so what prompted the message?. :-S

Jeremy
they did turn off the email feature vey shortly after Watched Threads began
The reason was that there was a bug in the sytem ................ several people were reporting getting large numbers of emails telling about the same addition to a thread.
One person reported getting multiple emails for the same addition 3 days on the run
So, GR decided to turn the email part off until they could get it sorted.
As usual, we have no idea of how many people got multiple emails on the same addition, or for multiple days, and who did not comment on the Boards, or who did not report the problem at all.

Thank you Sylvia.
I missed that discussion so it appears that all is working as it should (at the moment)
Joy I feel really sorry for all your problems and have tried in the past to suggest some solutions, but obviously unsuccessfully
One last attempt:......... Have you considered a Firewall problem? I had a situation a few years back when I suddenly I had a problem trying to connect to FreeBMD. All the other sites I was using at that time had no problems at all. It took me ages to figure it out, after contacting both the website and my ISP. It turned out to be Norton Internet Security was blocking some of the content. The solution that worked for me was to ditch Norton and install a Free firewall and also Free Virus Monitor.:-)
Whilst this worked for me with XP, I found further problems when I tried the same setup on my Aunt's VISTA computer. :-S
I can't think of anything else to suggest so please don't bite my head off if that is not the problem :-D :-D I can only speak from my own 20 odd years experience in both using and programming computers. :-)

Thank you, Jeremy. Yes, :-)
The errors could be experienced by a few, or by thousands, or more, only a small number post on the boards so we shall never know.
Apart from errors, why would, the site input "Password" in the space for my email address when having to log in? :-S - that is an odd thing.
I don't bite off heads, it's okay I am only on an internet forum :-)
Phil Moir has stated in another thread that the issues had been ongoing for over 12 months now.

Interesting that Jeremy has mentioned Norton as there is another member having problems with Norton / IE8 as reported on the Genealogy Chat board.
I had problems with it a few years ago and ended up removing all traces of it from my machine. Best thing I ever did.
My old XP PC is slightly slower than my newer W7 one, but then it has half as much memory and a slower processor. The XP one runs windows own Security Package, IE8 and Firefox 10 the W7 one Kaspersky, IE9 and Firefox 10. GR works equally well on either PC with IE or FF.
For the Kaspersky PC, I did have tho change the firewall settings in order for home networking to work correctly, but other than that, I don't even know it is there.
Currently I have no issues at all with GR - no timeout messages since they fixed the performance issues, and an unexpected logout only ever happened twice, and that was months ago.
I'm not convinced that GR should take the blame for everything when it comes to performance related problems. If there is a GR fault, then everyone experiences the same issue, which clearly is not the case.
Mention is often made of members not logging out.
If you switch your PC off then you log out automatically. However if your passwords settings are set correctly on both your PC and with GR then your PC will log you in automatically next time you access the site. If your connection drops unexpectedly then you may have to log in again, depending on what happened.
You only stay logged in if you don't switch off your PC. However, I was reading something recently which mentioned that if you do this, and it isn't recommended from a security point of view, then it is possible that your ISP will drop your internet connection overnight whilst it performs maintenance or refreshes your IP address causing you to loose you connection to any sites you are logged into, in turn requiring you to log back in next time.

I was unable to get in to GR through Bookmarks about 90 minutes ago
got the real run-around ................ sign in -> log in -> sign in -> sign in -> sign in
gave up
Tried again just now .................. and got sign in
SO I went to Google, searched for GR, got the site, signed in ....... got right in.
They just seem to want to make it difficult and more difficult!
