I have "50 Credits" on a tab on the membership line ............ but when I click on it it is NOT 50 free credits.

It instead tells me about Pay Per View

which is what Phil talked about earlier.

I think it is misleading to have it showing as 50 Credits .............. the implication is that I have 50 credits when I do not

Hi Island

I think I have found out why you can't see it........you need to be signed out of GR to see it :-S I ve tried while signed in and all I can see is an ungrade to Platinuim, only when I am signed out does it show both options, but I swear that was what I saw when I renewed last June.

I noticed it because I hadn't noticed it before......if that makes sense???

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 4 Aug 2011 22:12

I don't see 50 credits all I see is

Tooty, Standard Member, upgrade, pay per view, my account, sign out.

When I renewed in April I got a discount but didn't get free credits and to be perfectly honest I wouldn't want the credits cos I subscribe to other sites for records.

Beginning to think my name is on the wrong list as not been offered a discount on my sub which is due for renewal on 14th Aug

Do GR have a secret list of members that are pain in the *** ;-)

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 4 Aug 2011 23:07

I think that everyone should get an extension on their memberships because of the problems we have endured and a discount when we renew as a gesture of good will.

I renewed on the 20th... 6 month subscription no offer of free credits did get 20% discount in Jan though

I didn't know about this either, and I don't recall ever being offered any kind of discount. I shall watch with interest when my renewal date comes up in October.

just paid a subscription for a year...used up some credits doing searches...chose to view 'the original records' thinking this would show the birth/marriage certificates...just photographs of half pages of entries in a register - my relatives were off page/out of shot ...what a complete rip off!! Am I missing something here or did I just pay £20 to use a website for nothing? :-|

Hi there and welcome to the boards.

When it comes to birth and marriage certificates, you can't view these online at any of the websites available. Certificates can be purchased from the General Register Office directly and don't fall in the trap of buying them through any other site otherwise you will pay more for them.

GR has two types of birth, marriage and death records, those that are free to view, and those that require subscription or credits.

The Free records are not indexed by name but by page by the first three letters of the surname. so if you enter Evans, 1952 you will see the all pages that could contain names beginning with Eva. You then have to check each page to see if you can find the one you are looking for.

This is exactly the same way that FMP worked when it was first launched, although at that time you had to buy credits.

And to reinforce the last poster, what you see is a copy of the entry in the General Register Office Index, the actual registers being closed to the public.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Apr 2013 19:24

as Gai said,

in general you cannot not view birth, marriage or death (bmd) certificates anywhere on line

You have to buy them from GRO

what you have seen are pages from the Index to the GRO Register

For births between July 1 1837 and about 1955/60, it is much better to use the following site, which is free

www.freebmd.org.uk

There you will be able to see the actual entry in the GRO Register .............. which will give you a little bit more information than the Index, and will also provide the information that you need in order to buy from GRO

As Gai said .................. never, ever, buy certificates from any site other than GRO.

Certificates from them will cost £9.25, including postage, worldwide.

Other sites that say you can buy certificates from them, only get them from GRO, then charge you much much more!

Thanks Sylvia especially for stating the cost of the certificates as I can't figure
out how to put the pounds symbol on my posts.

InspectorGreenPen Report 5 Apr 2013 10:07

You can never see the entry in the GRO Register, on FreeBmd or indeed any other site, you can only ever see a copy of the GRO Index page.

As mentioned, though, it is always a good idea the check these if possible, rather than rely on the computer index list which is in effect an index of the index and prone to transcription errors.

However, many church registers have now been filmed and are available to view on-line, and for those marriages taking place after the introduction of registration in 1837 the church register will contain exactly the same information that is contained in the the Register Office and General Register Office Registers, and indeed on a certificate if you were to order it. So, in these cases, the inability to view the GRO Register is less of an issue.

As I explained previously, you can also view the GRO index pages for free on GR, albeit with a limited name search facility.

£ sign is Shift key 3 for me. Is your pc and keyboard wet up for non-uk?

IGP,

I am in Australia and using a Macbook Pro but I must be able to put the symbol in my posts.

When all else fails consult google.

Gai ;-)

Edit. Thanks to Google

I use alt + 1 5 6 (from the numeric pad)

£

alt is held down while the numbers are pushed in sequence

The numeric pad is to the right on my keyboard ........... and is not the numbered keys across the top.

IGP

This is not quite correct .............

"You can never see the entry in the GRO Register, on FreeBmd or indeed any other site, you can only ever see a copy of the GRO Index page."

the first you see when you enter the name(s) on other sites is not the Index page

it is the following ...............

Marriages Mar 1860 (>99%)
Park Gilbert Kendal 10b 696

click on the page number, and you can see who else is on the page

Marriages Mar 1860 (>99%)
Driver Ann Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view
Kendal Mary Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view
Park Gilbert Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view
Speight Thomas Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view

and you have the spouse!

It is only if you click on the "click to view (or eyeglasses symbol) that you get to see the Index page.

sylvia

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 5 Apr 2013 20:50

No-one can see the actual Register, unless you apply for a copy by ordering a cert, as it is closed to all public view.

However, what can be seen is information appearing on the GRO Index.

i.e.

Marriages Mar 1860 (>99%)
Driver Ann Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view
Kendal Mary Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view
Park Gilbert Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view
Speight Thomas Kendal 10b 696 Scan available - click to view

The above are FreeBmd's transcriptions of all the GRO Indexes which refer to page 10b 696.

Yes, it is very clever in that it brings together information indexed to the same Register page, but it is always one step removed from the Register page itself.

The GRO Index is not always correct either. My own marriage was indexed incorrectly by the GRO with both of our surnames spelled incorrectly. The GRO have since confirmed that the Register itself is correct, but admitted their own Index was wrong, as of course, is everything that has been transcribed or copied from it since.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Apr 2013 21:00

but what you see there is one step ahead of only seeing the actual Index page ......

........... which is only a listing of names in alphabetical order

that is what we have been discussing

Sylvia,

I don't have a numeric keypad on the macbook.

I googled how to get the pound symbol and on mine its hold down the Alt key and press the number 3 £.

So I have learnt something new.
