Absolutely - what Susan with numbers and Rose said on 2nd August.

If only the powers that be would look at other sites where moderation works, as has been requested - there again, maybe they have done so - and change their mind about moderation ..... sigh.

Phil must have an awful lot of time to spare to read every thread and every post, let alone answer them.

I still say that not many of the posts on this board are suggestions, but seem to be more like moans.

I'm wondering what happened to IGP...

I agree, Tooty

The discussions re suggestions or problems have been great, and also very interesting.

and I think helpful to Phil, who seems to be the only GR staffer who looks on here on a regular basis ............. although I have noted that Estelle also replies.

Only by members discussing problems or suggestions can the best solution be found.

I may have what I think is a great suggestion but someone else can see why it wouldn't work or think it is the stupidest thing that they have ever heard or see a way of enhancing the suggestion but by discussing the pros and cons can ensure that the best suggestions are put forward to the GR development meetings. The suggestions may come to nothing or they may be taken forward in a different form to what was envisage or as suggested. I appreciate the chance to "talk" to GR on their own website

Also where problems with the site arise someone else may have a solution or able to offer an idea for a solution which may work in the interim whilst awaiting a reply from GR. This is a 24 hour site but is not staffed 24 hours so I do not see that other members offering help is a big deal. In my opinion better to discuss problems on here rather than GRFB page

I am sorry but I just can't take it seriously

For instance...The suggestions board is nothing but a moaning board.

Suggestions there may be....but try to find them amongst the rest of the CHAT ( as in shouldn't it be on the chat board)?

One suggestion....one answer by a GR official...not chat after chat after chat....or other members answering ....GR should answer....not any one of Us....Try it....I bet it works......If we don't answer the queries.....They will have to.......In my opinion ....that is.

I also am wondering why no mention of the prefixes since it has been pointed out?

I believe there are several threads about the names of the boards causing confusion. Genealogy Chat is pprobably the worst named as it is so similar to Gereral Chat and the only chat on it is to keep tip threads near the top.

I find that web sites that are well moderated don't have members fretting so much about who, when, where and how, but self moderated ones do.

I really am disappointed. I was expecting so much more initiative from the members on here.

We ask for designated boards, (Janey's thread for example?) and when no one uses them for their intended purpose we let GR know by email and let THEM sort it out.

Oh, come on - we can do better than that.....!

Susan with numbers,
I completely agree :-D

I have never heard of a website that had members fretting so much about who, when, where and how.

Members should be able to relax and enjoy the website and if something isn't to their liking let GR know via an email and make THEM do the work.

As it is, while it remains down to members to try and direct people to the right place, it leads to several outcomes

that new posters get given good advice in a friendly manner
that new posters get given good advice in a curt manner
that new posters get given incorrect advice ( in either manner)
that old members are accused of 'policing' when they give good advice (in either manner)

that GR gives inadequate advice and sits back and counts the pennies it is saving while its helpers take the flak ( in either manner lol).

Susan10146857 Report 2 Aug 2011 00:26

How about we let the headache of who should do what where and how, to the site owners? After all, do we not pay them enough to do so?

None of us should be telling anyone to do anything....tis not up to us....we shouldn't be getting ourselves into such knots over the why's and wherefores.
Tis nowt to do with us......If we don't like what we see or what is being done.....Then we should get in touch with GR and complain......Maybe they will do something.....maybe not......but whatever.......It is not for us to sort out.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 2 Aug 2011 00:16

I'd concur that the prefixes were going to be implemented by Phil, himself, once he has read the thread - not for opening posters to do for themselves.

He says "I am going to....." in his stickied thread.

Consider it the equivalent Phil or his staff signing the thread to acknowledge it has been read and taken note of. The Prefixes will make it easier for them to categorise the comments.

Goodness knows how GR can get people to post on the 'correct' board. It seems mean to RR ones blatantly in the 'wrong' place. A request for guidance about a topic/search on Genealogy chat might be the 'correct; place for it to start with, but then it naturally evolves into a look up, which ought be rights to be on FLR or FA.

I dont quite follow that ? I find show and tell works well

Maybe get Davina to present it ?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Aug 2011 23:42

and how many would watch that video?

I reckon most would skip it

and it might well also drive people away.

Not many read all the guidelines, which is why I suggested a short introductory video with commentary covering the main points on how to navigate the boards, tree building, record viewing etc that would have to be viewed when newly entering the site ?

How about anyone who has a post count of zero having the rules displayed and having to tick boxes to say they understand the rules of the board, in a similar fashion to the agreement to T&Cs that you have to do when installing new software.

:-)
