i wonder...I just moved over to my old PC from my laptop - now my PC uses IE6 (egads, I know) and when the threads come up they slip down the page and the formatting is all fouled up...

Now I noticed just then on my own thread that the links look like this

Report as Abuse Edit Delete Mark this
as answered

Now I wonder if it is possible that the posters themselves are inadvertently reporting their own post by clicking on the left hand link, thinking they are marking it as answered, but actually reporting it instead!!!

I haven't tried it so not sure what comes up - does it ask to confirm the reporter's intention - e.g. are you sure you want to report this thread? - or if it just 'does it'.

Perhaps GR needs to follow the lead of Facebook and have a bit more detail - asking the reason for the report, such as...

Abusive or inappropriate content
Duplicate thread
Living person's details included

What do others think? I'm not sure if this has been suggested before (or even if it is in fact what happens now!)

True to a point Jonesey but Sue's first posting in her long running thread was simply helpful tips for newbies............the whole thread went!

No rhyme nor reason it seems.

Jonesey Report 17 Jun 2011 08:58

If my understanding is correct this is what happens if a post which has been referred for review is found, by whoever at GR is responsible for deciding such things, to be guilty of a breach of GR's rules or of infringement of a third party's privacy.

If the offending post is the original post, then the whole thread is deleted.

If the offending post is a later one within the body of the thread only that post is deleted. The remainder of the thread continues to be displayed.

Remarking that the current apparent considerable increase in the number of posts being requested for review is the result of GR members asking for change is probably both inaccurate and misleading. Perhaps the poster of that comment fails to see what the fuss is about because they have not had one of their own posts removed and then subsequently restored after it has been found to be innocent of any breach of GR's rules or the privacy of any individual.

My thoughts Sox are.....it's NOT you, so dont worry! It's someone or a group of people that are having their fun

Keep posting thats what I say :-)

I had my thread put up for review yesterday. regarding my Grt Aunte, Of whom I have not requested info about before.

I would dearly love to know why.

After a 2yr break I would love to know why me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any thoughts?

I can confirm that the whole of Ginny's thread was removed last year but we never knew why.

Likewise Sue's 'Help us to help you' thread was entirely removed too. I have often seen comments, especially on Chat, that threads have been 'whooshed'. So it has happened.

This thread isn't about change - some of which are great - it's about the fact that so many opening posts, which are totally innocuous, are being Requested for Review.

There are too many of them for it to be an innocent poster who doesn't know what the button is for (I have been asked that several times by newbies)or, it's a glitch in the system whilst things are being changed.

The final thing to consider is, that it's someone with a peculiar sense of humour who finds delight in RR'ing just for the sake of it.

I had a long standing thread removed when it was RR'd no warning and no explanation...so yes they did remove the entire thread

Members may have asked for change but I never asked to have none offending posts RR'd

Change is a completely seperate issue to the one that we are talking about here

Here, the main discussion is the vindictive reporting of posts that have no abusive content.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 17 Jun 2011 07:21

No, the whole thread was not always removed, only the offending post.

I can't see what the fuss is about. Members asked for the change, which is why it has been made. As Jax has said, the result is that it is now a bit more obvious.

Gee

Gee Report 17 Jun 2011 07:03

In the past when a post was reported the whole thread was removed!

Phil

Maybe if the reporting of a post had to go via an email to GR there would be less RRs

I cant imagine what it must be like for new members to post and have it RRd....they would never dare post again and some are very elderly members who may worry themselves sick about it

Now that's nasty

jax

jax Report 17 Jun 2011 05:00

If they cant track them down how can they send emails to the people who have reported them ?

In the past when a post was reported you did'nt know until it was removed the next day or whenever

But now it is removed straight away perhaps it is more obvious?

Cherilyn,

In one of Phil's post he states that GR can't track who is doing the Reporting which I think is absurd. Shame they can't as these members will go unpunished.

Also another matter has been raised is the fact that Free members can Report posts on the boards. I still can't get my head around that one. Why on earth would you allow a free member to Report threads when they can't post on the boards.

It seems this was a problem a few years back before I joined but up until recently I hadn't noticed threads that had been Reported.

Is it just me or has this Reporting of threads only became a real problem since the introduction of the Living Relatives Board?

I'm glad you guys have been talking about this, it is really ridiculous!

I hadn't really noticed it before but now every day there seem to be more and more threads reported, when as far as I can tell there was absolutely nothing at all wrong with them! What is going on??! Is it someone's idea of a stupid game?

I hope GR are looking into it and boot off whoever is doing it. They must be able to tell. Even if they are being sneaky with multiple names/emails, there will still be a pattern.

Sic 'em, GR.

As for the malicious stuff, I haven't noticed it...but it is a shame, and very childish as AmazingGrace says. This has always been such a great community, we don't need or want this @rap (I suppose that will be reported now)

Gee

Gee Report 16 Jun 2011 20:47

I see there are lots of RRs on the boards today.....very silly

Phil where have you gone!

AmazingGrace08

AmazingGrace08 Report 16 Jun 2011 13:59

Persie, like Sylvia (I think) I have had someone telling me off because I was Australian and how you can always tell when a dumb Colonial ahs been on the board because they post at times when people in the UK don't.

How childish is that. firstly it shouldn't matter where you come from, the site is open to everyone around the world I would have assumed and secondly, how many years has it been since the UK stopped sending convicts to Australia..some people must just never get over things!

Susan I was on this morning (your night) and the posts were under review then, now they have reappeared. unless GR were testing something perhaps. :-) there wasn't anything offensive about their content that I could see.

This RR just goes from bad to worse, I hope Phil can make some of his changes very very soon
