Paging Problem

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I have just signed on for the day ........ and find that a new paging problem has developed.

When I open a thread, or click to look at a subsequent page .............. the thread or page opens, then the site freezes for a second. This is followed by the thread or page "disappearing" to below all the "bumpf" on the left of the screen.

This usually happens only when someone has entered a line that goes beyond the "confines" of the box

That is not the case today.

It is extremely annoying to a) have the site freeze, and b) to be continually screening way down in order to begin reading posts.

What has happened?

Please can you fix it?

Suggestion .......................... I am using IE6 (I know, you don't need to say anything about that!), but for the first time I now have an emoticons box below Reply Here.

Is this emoticons box extending out to far to the right?????????

This has been happening to me, at first I thought it was my browser but it wasn't because I switched and checked. Very annoying

it is very annoying indeed, Tooty!

Yes, freezing and jumping pages - mentioned in other threads, too.

Pages jumping, freezing again today; also, just now when I wanted to add your reply it kept taking me to send an email to a friend.

The site is very, very slow today.

All other sites that I have visited today (all free) have not been slow.

For a few minutes, I was getting the essential maintenance message, an hour or two ago.

I suspect all these things are related to ongoing tinkering, hopefully for the better.

The slowness really is nerve-wearing, though.

I just have to add that having a functioning inbox, one I don't have to reload 6 times in order to access, has made my life so much nicer. Some of the fixes really are working!

If only I can get over the stress reaction I feel when I go to click on my inbox even though it's been fixed ...

and I still have to wait for the thread or page o unfreeze, then slip down below the ads before I can read, post or whatever.

My emoticons box opens about 1/2 of the way along the width of the Reply box (from the left side), so obviously it is going to extend well to the right ...... thus causing the same problem as when someone types an overlong line (such as an url).

There is actually a lot of empty space after the confused emoticon ....................... could that be reduced?

I hate to sound like you-know-who ... but have you tried clearing my cache?

(edit ... um, I dunno, would clearing my cache help you? :-D Your cache!)

Coincidentally, yesterday afternoon I rebooted (I don't do it often enough) and installed all my windows updates, ran crapcleaner, and emptied my cache and temp files.

I immediately got a new look at Ancestry search results. Shaded bands. Never had that before. Did they tinker at the same time I cleared my cache, or had I been getting old versions of the pages? (Does this mean that Ancestry will stop stalling on me??)

Did I clear my cache at exactly the right moment to avoid problems at GR? That would be a big coincidence ...

Give it a try, you never know.

I clear my temporary files by using Disc Cleanup every 2 or 3 days .............. I used to do it every night but have got a bit slack recently.

But not sure what you mean by my cache?

and I see the shaded / unshaded bands on ancestry ...... I don't remember seeing those yesterday.

I wasn't paying that much attention to the background, just to the words!

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/customizing/clearcache.mspx

Internet Explorer 6: How and Why to Clear Your Cache

Storing these files in your cache can make browsing the Web faster because it usually takes your computer less time to display a Web page when it can call up some of the page's elements or even the entire page from your local Temporary Internet Files folder.

What it's not saying is the reason: if you have old versions of pages stored, it may interfere with loading the new versions, and that could be a problem with this site these days.

No.1 just wandered in and said he did his yesterday too, and things seem peppier. (He adds another reason, that malware can hide in your cache, blah blah, but sounds like a good idea to avoid it ...)

Follow the instructions at that site for doing it. You never do know!

but that link says to use go to Internet Options, then to General, and to the tab for Temporary Internet Files, and delete

I use Disc Cleanup ........... which deletes any or all of the following:-

Downloaded Program Files <<<<<
Temporary Internet Files <<<<
Microsoft Error Reporting Files <<<<
Office Setup Files
Recycle Bin <<<<
Temporary Files <<<<
Web Client/Publisher Temporary Files <<<<
Compress Old Files
Catalogue Files for the Content Indexer <<<<

I delete all the ones marked

Is this not at least similar to your cleaning my cache?

I have just done Disc Cleanup

Temporary Internet Files = 0

and no change in the paging problem, with the emoticon box still shifted to the right, and extending far past the thread confines

Ah, okay, whatever I use has a specific "clear cache" option.

One last annoying suggestion ... close all open pages and restart computer now? :-D

I'm sounding like a member of "theteam", aren't I?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Jun 2011 20:15

but I shut down and restarted the computer once yesterday, and then this morning

I always turn the computer off when I'm not going to be on it for a couple of hours, although the power is still on

I turn off the power at night

Yesterday, I closed all open sites for about an hour in mid-afternoon. Then I closed the sites and turned off the computer when we went out in the evening. I then closed all sites, turned off the computer AND turned off the power before going to bed

The problem is that for some reason the Emoticon box is shifted to the right on my computer.

The left hand edge doesn't start until almost ½ way along the width of the Reply box, and so it automatically extends way beyond the right hand edge of the thread.

It's just like the problem caused when someone posts a very long url without any breaks OR posts a great lot of (eg) xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
