actually, I don't understand why anyone who uses the boards regularly, and can see the problem, wouldn't opt for a "personal" board name



Remember the guy a few months ago who got all upset because someone had posted that he was going to cancel his membership (I forget the reason why)

Two guys had the same christian name. I think it was Allan or Alan

One posted regularly on the boards and was very upset that someone had "dared" to somehow assume his name, breaking into "his" account, and post false information.

He wanted the other guy thrown off GR, if not prosecuted, and wanted to assure everyone that he had no intention of leaving GR.

There was also one called Michael who tried to get Michaels informative thread deleted saying it was rubbish and he was the real Michael :D

I was a bit surprised at our Allan not having figured this all out. ;)

Managed to miss Michael's hissy fit!

I sure do know the other way, though, after somebody jumped on my *very first post* on the boards and accused me of all sorts.

I guess the post count feature could help with that bit occasionally. ;)

in case nobody has noticed ,we also have three suzanne"s and few susans. very confusing at times ,ive had afew mix ups with people thinking all the suzanne posts were mine(we had several going at once)but nothing to serious.x :-D

I think you will find there is a lot more than three Suzanne's if you use the Find ancestors or Living relatives boards on a regular basis you will see the multi names. There are many with my name whether it is the full or shortened version.

I would suggest if you are not happy about it change it to something else.

no i dont thinki said"i was not happy" i think i said in notso many words that it wasconfusing for some people but not a problem for me. i dont use living relatives much and only posted once find ancesters ,and that was several yrs ago(sorry about txt,my keyboard is playing up) ive always used my real name since i joined in 2004,and think changing it now will only add to the confusion. :-S

Add an Avatar then...It does'nt have to be a photo of yourself but at least people will get to regonise it.as being you.

yes good idea..but not really needed unless suzanne threads get out of hand or become abusive,like ive said its not a problem to me,but can see the problem if someone is causing trouble. :-D

Without intending causing a storm, I also would like to see unique names on the boards, but how to I get one of two people with same sitename to change. :-S

Also, I would like to implement a maximum length of sitename, as some of the sitenames impact the display of the website in places. Not sure if I'll win this argument either.

It is strange that this site allows multiple board names (being birth names)

Apart from Facebook this is the only site where I have not had to put numbers after my name or something before it

Instead of changing the site names assign a board name to for existing members.

My board name is unique but where there is multiple board names that are the same add a number and give the option of changing it to something unique but do not allow just the first name.

When new members register add a field for board name

Changing existing members to shorter names will most probably be met with opposition. However you could limit the number of characters for new members and maybe email those whose names are too long and explain why you wish to limit the characters perhaps some will see the logic and change their board name accordingly

When the names are too long one cannot put in their name as poster when doing an advanced search.. GR limits the number of letters..

Persephone hmmm I think 10 characters is long enough... oh dear.... Tootyfruity is too long.. LOL. ;-)

My real name has 10 letters, but dont want to use it anyway...even my mother does'nt like the name :-D
