Wow, Philmoir............ 'A result' !!!

If you have now resolved this issue I thank you (and Chris).

It was, indeed, very frustrating and there was a lot of editing required to the majority of my posts in order to get rid of them.

I am very happy to mark this thread as answered, if only I can work out how to do it :-D

Philmoir - thanks for that. It was really quite distracting to write an apparently normal post, then see emoticons zapped into it when one submitted it.

We have just rolled out a patch to resolve the unintended appearance of emoticons (thanks to Chris for that). It was caused by the option to allow 2 character shorthand versions to emulate the icons, which we have withdrawn. You can still use emoticons but behind the scenes it will only use three character versions. Our apologies for the frustration this has caused.

To see the change, you MAY have to force a refresh of your browser - this is normally CTRL+F5 together as you browser will cache the settings.

Our colleague Vera found me some good info in US censuses the other day.

I had this irresistible urge when I thanked her to address her as "Vera love". Which I did. ;)

Ah yes, JC, I find "lol" as irritating as emoticons. Also being called "Hon" by someone I don't even know.
Guess I'm just a miserable old broad!

Oh, and Margee -- trust me, you don't find emoticons nearly as annoying as I find "lol".

you'll find I'm not the only one with my tongue hanging out for one such.

If I denote Schedule 1 (the person schedule) of the Canadian 1901 census by 1901 S1, then obviously Schedule 2 (the house schedule) is 1901 S2.

I definitely agree that Janey needs her 'tongue in cheek' emoticons ;-) they were asked for, I think, simply for that very reason...that people are sometimes unable to tell the 'tone' of a post.

Without body language,the smile or frown come to that, it is often difficult to tell whether a post is friendly banter ( see my remark re Janey as a case in point !) or just being nasty.

I don't really care about the emoticons


HOWEVER I do care that there are codes that cause emoticons to appear


and these have been selected with great disregard for what those codes might actually be for, and where they might occur.


So we get disruption of posted information because a colon followed immediately by enter for a new line produces a daft face.


That is absolutely ridiculous ..... and actually demonstrates a lack of knowledge about genealogy by the developers on site!

If I didn't have emoticons, how would anyone know when my tongue is in my cheek, as it is most of the time?? although many people seem unable to tell.

I even invented one of my own for that:

Whether emoticons are available or not some people will always be nasty when the mood takes them on this site and I have witnessed some diabolical exchanges prior to their introduction.

I agree though we don't need emoticons to have fun they are just frivolous but quite a few members must have requested them for them to be introduced. I was not one, I am just indifferent to them.

I dont see sticking a tongue out as being nasty you only have to look at teenagers plus some in their 20s photos on Face book they have always got their tongues hanging out.

I have already seen this one :P used in a nasty way.
I often have fun on this site but I don't need an emoticon to do so.

They are just a bit of fun and there is nothing wrong with being childish occasionally.

They were instated because some members had requested them on the survey. They just need to work properly so that they do not interfere with normal activities on this site.

My simple solution to this problem is to just get rid of emoticons. I think they are so childish, when someone uses one my opinion of that person goes down a notch.

I've sent an email to "theteam" and I am expecting a reply any year now.
