Ritchie Shirreffs Thanks to Ann Hurst finding a date in Kew I was able to get a newspaper story in Aberdeen Library which solved the mystery of the disappearance of this mariner. Ritchie was one of the crew of the City of Quebec, which was shipwrecked off the Isle aux Mortes, Newfoundland, on 8th May 1871. We have discovered so much this last week and now have a list of 13 of the 17 crew from this ship. Names are given on Tips thread, City of Quebec crew list, but there is more to this story. If you have a missing mariner from that era please get in touch, he just may have been on this ship. According to the 1871 census, 9 of the 13 crew (that we know of) travelled to London from Aberdeen on the City of London prior to boarding the Quebec and sailing from London on 6th April 1871. Thanks all of the people who have helped clear up this mystery for both Keith Hassell and myself, Christine Wood |
