I was at a flea market in Chorley earlier this year when I spotted an old diary amongst some old books. It was a complete diary of the year 1918 written by a schoolboy called Victor Staples aged about 14years. It was written in copper plate writing and was in excellent condition. I bought it for the price of 50p..I didn't haggle! I spent days reading it... it was facinating getting an insight into the life of Victor and his family and his hopes and fears. I wrote names of relatives on a pad and searched Genes Reunited. I found a possible link but alas it was not to be. Last week the person I contact on this site mailed me asking if I still had the diary as he believed a relative of Victor had contacted him. I was delighted to make contact with Victor's granddaughter who now lives in Scotland. I was even more excited to find his daughter was still alive and living in Yorkshire. The information in the diary is totaly new to the granddaughter who is making her tree and is a huge find for her. The diary will be returned to the family and tracing his relatives on this site has given me a great deal of pleasure. The diary is a piece of history.... a rare glimpse into one boys life at the end of the Great War that has now found its home again.
