Having been encouraged to dig deeper by the wife of a 2nd cousin who contacted me through Genes Re-united, I made my first trip to the 'Land of my Fathers' at Rosscommon in Ireland. I visited some graveyards there, made some enquiries and to cut a long story short, met an 85 year old distant cousin, who was still residing on the farm my great-great grandfather had worked. In conversation I asked him, “Leo, I grew up with a romantic tale that my grandfather (who died before I was born), sold one of his father’s cows at the market in Sligo, and with the money he ran off to England with the girl who became my grandmother. Is there any truth in that story?” “Ahh - No! No!” said Leo, “Dat’s not right at all, no not at all. It was two heifers he took, an sure dat’s why he nivir come back.” |
