Over the last 2 years I have 'met' several 4th/6th/8th-cousins etc, through this site, and we have been exchanging research. We have traced our shared rare family name - Skermer - right back to 1540 and to the village of Belton, in north Leicestershire. A few months back one of our little group came over from the USA, so four of us who live in England arranged to meet up with them in Belton. What a wonderful time we had, meeting up with distant relatives who all shared an interest in genealogy; then after a splendid lunch in the George Hotel, going around the church and churchyard where our ancestors were married and buried, exploring the streets whose names we knew from census returns, finding the remains of the old mill where one of us had an ancestor who was the miller... Maybe this will become the first of a future annual get-together of the Skermer descendants!
