I can finally add to this board! I started researching my family tree in order to try to find out more about my grandmother's family. She was fostered at birth, in the 1920s, and knew very little about her 'real' mother. Luckily, she remembered the year her birth mother had died, as she had had to go to the solicitor's to see if anything had been left to her in the will. Her grandfather was German and had changed/anglicised the family name in the early 20th century. It's taken a while, but pieces have finally been coming together. Then, over Easter, I sent a letter to someone who had the same name as my grandmother's first cousin. It turned out to be him, and he sent me a lovely letter, along with the address of another cousin, to whom I wrote a couple of weeks ago. She very kindly sent me lots of information as well as a photograph, not just of my great-grandmother, but also of all her brothers and sisters (11 surviving) and their parents. So, from knowing nothing this time last year, I now know what the whole family looked like. Just wanted to say a big 'THANK YOU' to all those on GC who have helped me over the last 12 months, without whom I never would have discovered a lot of the information that I now have. Kind Regards, Kate |
