Oliver Report 22 Jul 2009 14:58

I have recently discovered a will of Martha Swain, who married John Swain in Jan 1763. until now the limit of the Swain tree was that Joseph Swain, birth unknown married Lydia Roberts in 1788, Burton Bradstockm and only one child of John and Martha was known, Thomas Swain born 1775. Martha's will lists 9 children including Joseph, born near the beginning of 1764,Thomas,, Martha, wife of John Lock( m. 1799) Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Scriven ( m. 1793), Mary, wife of William Hook(e) ( m. (ii) 1795, Nancy(Ann), wife ofJames Lorani, merchant of Alderney, Hannah, Amelia, and Susan.
As Joseph's eldest son John, harbourmaster at Bridport, married Jane Hooke dau of William and Mary, née Swain, both I and the present family of Hooke in Australia are ver pleased to find rthat Joseph and Mary were brother and sisters, and thie son and daughter were married.
Although I have traced the Hooke and Scriven families in some detail, i would be very glad if anyone can produce detail about the LORANI family ofAlderney and the Lock (e) family. This has been a major step forwards - (or backwards!) which I am am glad to share, Copies of the will are available to anyone whose tree is connected.
