A new life in Australia
Around 1911 Albert Henry Wakefield and his family decided to start a new life in Australia. Albert was to go out first. Secure a job and accomodation and then send for his wife, Martha Jane and his two children, Florrie 12yrs old and young Albert 11yrs old. They were to set sail in 1912 aboard the SS Irishman from Liverpool. However, only the children went out to their father. Martha Jane stayed in England, sending her children out there, alone, with luggage labels tied to their jackets with their names etc written on them. Martha Jane's brother, Edwin,( my grandfather ) never spoke to Martha Jane for a great number of years. He was so disappointed and angry at her for doing such an act, in sending her young children thousands of miles, all alone.
At long last our families have found each other. Thanks to Genes Reunited and Ancestry .com.
I recieved a phone call from Adelaide, it was my second cousin once removed. His grandfather was one of the children who went out. in 1912. My father and his grandfather were cousins and would have been delighted to know we were reunited at last. My father's sister another cousin is the only one alive at 87yrs old she is thrilled to bits.
