My father died in 1988 which prompted me to start searching my family name as i never new my Grandparents and like most people just wondered "Where do i come from". I started to ask my mother and learned that my Grandfathers name was Arthur but got misleading info about what his age/dob and year of death was so i was stuck from the start really. I tried searching on the info given went to various register offices and record offices all to no avail. I left it a few months then went back to searching left it again then back again until it suddenly struck me - get my dads birth certificate and my Grandads age will be listed on there - so it was born 1881 Now i had never heard of GR or any other site come to that and computers were expensive again i kept searching then leaving it going back and leaving it again time and work commitments meant that family history was on hold. It wasnt until about 1996 that i got my first P.C. with an internet connection that took all day to load just ONE page. I seem to remember that the 1901 census was late being released so in the meantime subscribes to a couple of sites and eventually found Arthur in the 1901 census. I found that it was working out quite expensive buying vouchers for various family history sites then searching for people when i didnt really know who i was searching for i stumbled across Genes Reunited after visiting Freinds Reunited and it is then that everything changed i find GR to be very reasonable with subscription charges and have been a member for several years now. I have nearly 200 relations in my tree which is always good even if just for quick reference i have found i have relations who worked on the railway, came from one part of the country to another (south to north) and relations who worked in the cotton mills, relations who were in the police force and one who sadly even commited suicide, also relations who are in New Zealand I have currently gone back to 1796 and am still searching. My mother has last year met up with a relative who she last saw in 1946 and i have contacted through GR three other living relatives who have all shared some sort of information. Although GR still dont have every record and district/county available i would say they are close i will continue to use GR as long as the prices for subscription dont go in line with most other sites i could mention and i thank the GR team for giving me my family, giving me my history and giving me something to do CARRY ON THE GOOD WORK GR Roy
