Have been tracing the Comers/Thurgoods for some time and got back to the 1700's with both. Have found first cousins/2nd cousins on both sides via this site and am now in touch with lots of relatives. Turns out my mother-in-law's old story about her father having been born in a Martello tower was absolutely correct; only sorry I can't talk to her about it since she is now 96 and has advanced Altzheimers. She would have been so interested in the history of her family. She will never know that her grandmother was in the Barnstaple workhouse, aged 10 (described as a Pauper) because her parents had died, but that she later married a sailor who ended up as a coastguard in Clacton, based on a Martello Tower, where her father and aunt were born. |
