I have a similar problem to Michael's, in that my father fought in WW1 somewhere in France (Lost the place and Battle etc), and was wounded twice sent to Birmingham war hospital. Records partially lost/burnt in WW2 bombings.

If you haven't already sent for his WW1 record, it would be worth waiting until 1st April, after which date there will be no charge.

See the new info now showing on the link I posted above, on 29th January.

Thank you all so very much for your your amazingly swift and dutiful replies - I am so very, very grateful. I will certainly chase up the details at the relevant office given the details you have provided. His wife was called Selina (quite unusual for these parts in the 1930's I would say) so I can certainly envisage this being the right chap. Thank you all once again, you have been brilliant.

Kind Regards,

Mike Holmes <3

If you feel it's worth it, just in case there's anything more surviving (which isn't very likely) , you can apply for a copy of his record.

Info and instructions here:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records

There's a non-returnable fee of £30, and it can take several weeks, if not months, for the record to be sent to you.

Aha! Here we are -

Sam Holmes
in the UK, World War I Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923

If that's your man, "widow" doesn't mean that Sam had died, which he obviously hadn't - just that Selina was named as NOK in case he were to die.

Unfortunately, most WW1 forces records have not survived, destroyed by bomb and fire damage at the records office.

His name was Sam, not Samuel.

So , there are these possible bits of army records - but not the whole record, which must be one of those which didn't survive:

Sam. Holmes
in the UK, Silver War Badge Records, 1914-1920
Name: Sam. Holmes
Rank: Private
Military Year: 1920
Regiment: Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment
Regimental Number: 18267
Discharge Unit: Lichfield
Discharge Regiment: Notts & Derbyshire Regiment
Badge Number: 25924
Piece: 3052
List Number: F 0301-0600
Record Group: WO
Record Class: 329

That man enlisted 30/10/14, and was discharged , because of wounds, on 24/1/17. Therefore very possibly wounded in 1916.
He had served overseas, but it doesn't say where.

Another part record for the same man:

Sam Holmes
in the UK, World War I Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920
Name: Sam Holmes
Military Year: 1914-1920
Rank: Private
Company: WO 329
Regiment or Corps: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment
Regiment Number: 18267
Medal Awarded: British War Medal and Victory Medal

And another:

However, there's nothing to identify him definitely as your great uncle.
[EDIT: BUT SEE POST BELOW AT 21:18 - assuming your great-aunt was Selina.]

Michael

Michael Report 29 Jan 2023 19:20

Hi Everyone

I'm trying to find any service records for my Great Uncle - Samuel Holmes who apparently served in WW1. He was born in 1888 in Holmesfield Derbyshire and he passed away in January 1930 in Shirebrook, Derbyshire - he was married with four children.

In the record of the church service at his funeral it mentions that he signed up for service and saw action in France but he was injured in 1916 and discharged from the service. Since he received his injuries he did attend Birmingham Military Hospital.

I've tried searching but cannot find any record of Samuel's military service . I'm assuming he would have been with the Sherwood Foresters but that's not a given of course.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Mike Holmes.
