WW2 forces records are, for the most part, not online.
Unfortunately, either version of his name is a very common one - and he may be listed only as John or as Anthony in whatever online military records there are.
Looking at www.forces-war-records.co.uk - there are a number of men listed as A J Simpson
Assuming the man you're interested in was born in England or Wales, there are only two possible births in approx the 1914-24 timeframe you suggest:
SIMPSON, JOHN ANTHONY WATSON GRO Reference: 1923 M Quarter in RUGBY Volume 06D Page 1332
SIMPSON, ANTHONY JOHN GRO Reference: 1925 J Quarter in STOW Volume 04A Page 1610
There was no child named John Ant(h)ony Simpson, or Ant(h)ony John Simpson born in Scotland in that time.

??? Death of the man born in Stow ??
Anthony John Simpson in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 Name: Anthony John Simpson Death Age: 81 Birth Date: 23 May 1925 Registration Date: Nov 2006 Registration District: Oxfordshire Inferred County: Oxfordshire Register Number: N03D District and Subdistrict: 695/1N Entry Number: 241
That man would only have been 14 in 1939. If he was in the forces, it must have been towards the end of WW2. (Which 1944 certainly is.)
