https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaica

Includes:

"The island remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered it, renaming it Jamaica. Under British colonial rule Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with a plantation economy dependent on the African slaves and later their descendants. The British fully emancipated all slaves in 1838, and many freedmen chose to have subsistence farms rather than to work on plantations. "

My 4x Great Grandfather was a sergeant in the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot in Jamaica in 1818. He was married and had a daughter born there. I would like to find out more about his regiment and Jamaica at that time. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.
