Where can I get details of ancestors Court Marshall for desertion and dates of his service with the army? We know:

Court Trail Date: 19th March 1869
Place: Shorncliffe, Kent
Regiment: 73 Foot
Reference: WO 86/18

Newspaper article quoted 76 Foot not 73 Foot.

Would this information be free and available via the library system?

Obtained from the National Archives a copy of a Court Marshall schedule, where George was listed. Expecting to get copy of Hearing Notes, so disappointed with the information received: -

Private George Chatfield, 73rd Foot, Shorncliffe, 19th April,
Desertion M.a.Kit. Sentence 56.

What is M.a.kit; is this related to his uniform?
Would 56 be days or months?
Would he have been discharged following sentence?
Would he have stayed at Shorncliffe or gone to Colchester to complete his sentence? :-(

According to the answer to this query about a similar case:

it means "Desertion, and making away with kit".

The sentence would be 56 days, not months.

I don't know where he would have completed his sentence.

I think (and I don't know for sure) he wouldn't have been discharged after the 56 days. If they were going to discharge him, I expect they would have done that immediately, and not bothered with the 56 days.
