According to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9th_Queen's_Royal_Lancers

9th Dragoons and 9th Lancers (Queen's Royal) are one and the same with name changes along the way

Martin not an unusual name so could well be 2 different people

It looks as though the Regiment was renamed variously as time went by rather than amalgamate with others so I wouldn't have thought his number would have changed?

Nowadays each Soldier etc has a unique number. It's not that long ago (WW1 for instance) when numbers were issued concurrently in each different Regiment so you might find the same number allocated to several different men

Hi Folks,

Please could someone do a double look-up for me?

Robert MARTIN service number 543 on the 1841 Army Worldwide Index and;
Robert MARTIN service number 492 on the 1861 Army Worldwide Index.

I am looking for the above who served in India with the 9th Lancers. He is on the Sutlej Medal Roll (1845/45) as Private 543. I am trying to work out if Private 492 is one and the same or just an annoying coincidence. Just my luck to have two people of the same name in the same regiment with very close service numbers.

Hey Ho!

Thanking you in anticipation.
