Hi
I have just found out that my great uncle was in the Royal Navy in ww2. Is there any chance I can get his records? From my understanding you have to be next of kin , however he had no children so the closest people to him would be his niece and nephews / like my mother. Would there be any chance of getting his records if my mum tried? He died in 2000. Also , do you think there would be a photograph to his records?

It's worth your mother applying, particularly if she can send a copy of his DC.

From what she was told, the information from the records isn't particularly full. The majority were given to the Sailors on their demob.

Please don't waste your money. The Royal Navy doesn't keep records of ex-personnel. They are given to the seamen on leaving the service so that they can be used as references for job applications.
If the records still exist, the person to ask would be whoever inherited his estate when he died.

Andysmum. Records generally do exist. Though they might not contain as much information as one would hope.
Two of my greatuncles enlisted prior to WW1 and retired sometime later. Then went back for WW2. Their early service records are on-line. But not the data for WW2.

Enclose a cheque or postal order for £30 per record, if you are not the widow/widower or civil partner of the data subject at the time of death, made payable to “The MOD Accounting Officer”. DO NOT SEND CASH! Regretfully we cannot accept Canadian Postal orders. (This non-refundable fee covers the research into the information you seek although we are unable to guarantee that we will be able to find any data relating to the individual).
Please only enclose copies of Death certificates etc as we do not accept responsibility for lost or damaged documents.
Please be aware that WWII documents were not produced in the same way as modern records due to a direct consequence of the conflict. They were not created or kept for research purposes, but for use by the government or law courts of the day. Consequently, you may find that the records you receive are not as full or as comprehensive as you might expect.
