Any information on either or both of these men would be appreciated - I think Joseph was in the army but I have no further details, Both were born in Birmingham 1914 and 1918 respectively. Their mmn was Cooper.

I think this could be the parents marriage:

Marriages Mar 1914 (>99%)

BUTLER Leonard Watton Birmingham 6d 368 Scan available - click to view
COOPER Beatrice Steadman Birmingham 6d 368 Scan available - click to view
Steadman Joseph Cooper Birmingham 6d 368 Scan available - click to view
Watton Alice M Butler Birmingham 6d 368

If so, Joseph Sn and Beatrice are living 142 Hingeston St, All Saints ward, west Birmingham on the 1935 ERs. Joseph Jn is listed with them, but Leslie would not be old enough to vote.

Added: The parents had been living at this address since at least 1925 according to the ER, but Joseph Sn is listed here from 1920 & 1922 so far as I can see. Beatrice probably wouldn't have been eligible to vote until she was 30 - so possibly born between 1892 & 1895?

If the above is the correct family, and I can only see 1 Joseph born in Q2 1914 on freebmd then I think this may be his death:

Deaths Jun 1979 (>99%)

STEADMAN JOSEPH 27AP1914 BIRMINGHAM 32 1473

Flip Report 19 Aug 2018 09:40

Freebmd also only shows 1 Leslie Steadman born in 1918, and this death gives a birth date in the right quarter:

Leslie Steadman
Death Age:79
Birth Date:7 Sep 1918
Registration Date:Apr 1998
Registration district:Keighley
Inferred County:West Yorkshire
Register Number:B36C
District and Subdistrict:0821B

On the 1950 ER Joseph (jn) & Beatrice were at 200 Kendal rise road and in 1955 Beatrice was still at this address, but no Joseph. There is, however a Ronald Steadman with her, who I think is her son born in 1932 who would not have been eligible to vote in 1950.

As you’ve posted on Military Chat, were you looking for their military records?
If so, they’d still be with the MOD.

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html
They’d each cost £30 & could take a number of months to arrive.

Thank you, Flip and Kathleen, for all that information - some I did have but nevertheless very grateful, Thanks also +++DetEcTive+++ yes, it was military information I was mostly after - wasn't sure if there was a way to find regiments they may have joined but obviously the service records would be interesting to see so thanks for the link.

Unfortunately L & J Steadman are not unique names. In any event, there’s very little in the way of records from WW2 online.
Those that are freely available are entries from the CWGC recording their date of death in service, with place of burial or monument inscription.

Sometime in the future, when all participants would have expected to have died, the MOD might allow a FH company to digitalis the records. Until then, we have to stump up the fees.
We do have to remember that the MOD prioritises requests from living personnel.

Thanks for the information ===DetEcTive+++ I didn't realize how common the name of Joseph Steadman was until I started looking through records trying to help my friend. Thank you for the information about service records I will pass this on and then it will be up to him to contact MOD if he wishes to do so.
