Unless you already know his age & the name of his father to trace back, you'd need to order a copy of his MC - name of spouse removed to protect your own privacy

If you're looking for his military records, they'd still be with the MOD. They can be ordered at a cost of £30 with forms from http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html They'd be free if he or his widow can sign

These records come up if he was born in England or Wales - you really need more info to accept or reject. There's probably a number of likely men with the same name, but born/died elsewhere.

There's no point continuing until you have some firm details. Please buy the MC - that would give his declared age & his father's name. It should also give his military number to help you order his military records

Thank you so much for your quick and helpful replies.
I do have the marriage certificate but it gives no further details such as military number. It just says he was a sergeant. Name of father - yes. However, I wanted to find out when and where he and my aunt returned to ( I have an address in UK, but no records associated with it and there's other conflicting detail, which makes it difficult to sort things out). No-one is left alive to assist! I can't even find things like electoral records or anything to fill in the large gaps. I can't get his military record as I don't have a military number. So, I was hoping there may be some one searching who may actually have known him!
One lives in hope...

The best way to contact people is to use Search all member trees, top right under Search. Send a message to anyone listing his name, and that of his father. If they can access the linked email address, they’ll know you’ve left a message & be able to reply. GR never delete dormant accounts. People lose interest, change email providers or become too frail or die. You can check if a message had been opened by looking in your GR sent messages box. Unread ones have an envelope icon next to them.
Civilian ships passenger lists are available online up to 1960. However military transport is not. His military records would show his movements including when he was embarked or discharged from service.
As you know the address they went to, you could search the ER. Some are online, others for the likely periods would usually be held by the nearest library with a local studies section. There is likely to be a charge unless you can visit in person.
Unless you have access to passenger lists yourself, helpers would need their yob to identify the correct people. Did they have children while abroad? That would tighten the time frame.
Added hours later - not to worry about service number as long as you have his date of birth. You already have other checking points you can take from the MC. I *think* you should be able to get an unredacted copy of his records if those I posted last night are correct. Not only was he born over 100 years ago, it’s more than 30 years since his death. A hard copy of the electoral register can only be searched by address. If you don’t have one, you’re stumped. As mentioned, it would be possible to work back from one you may have. At least that would tell you when they first moved in & later, out. You could do the same with the address on his DC.

Hello Detective.
Thanks again for your posts. It's most odd that I cant find electoral records for their given address ( given on my aunts death certificate etc) - unless of course they didnt bother - one isn't forced to vote in the uK! They lived in Middlesbrough which has problems in that it has been under several different local authority re-organisations and its harder to track down thier address because of that. I have a sneaky feeling things may not yet be on line in the latest Local Authority to have taken over that area.
I shall be looking at the service history when I get chance. I didn't realise I could access them if not a blood relative. So thats a possibility now.
Thanks again

To track down the ER, you'll probably have to email all the current relevant authorities. [email protected]
The Central Library has a Local Studies section (& 2 email addresses!) [email protected] [email protected]
Start with the Library- they'll be able to tell you if they hold the ER or if not, who does. If you can't visit in person, they could do search the address on your behalf but are likely to make a charge.
