final note - I have now found out that Joyce WAS in the NAAFI and that is how she met her husband.

Thanks to both of you, I did wonder about land girls but like you said my thought also was NAAFI but I didn't realize the women got moved around to various service camps, Thank you for your replies- I'm curious now so will get my friend to do some asking around his relatives.

The three services were WRENS, ATS (army) and WAAF.

There were land army girls who worked on the land who got posting also forestry workers - some were female.

The fact she worked in a bar makes her ideal for NAAFI work so she could end up at any service camp helping out in the NAAFI and messes.NAAFI personnel also had postings.

She could have joined the services - although I don't know how you would find out as WW2 service records are still with the MOD. It could however mean that she was sent around the country doing war work. Many young women were recruited to work in munitions factories and other war work.

On the 1939 Register the above lady was working as 'bar general' but opposite andpartly blocked out were the words "see below for postings" - would this mean Joyce had joined the services and how could I find out any information?
