Have you looked for a marriage in both Ireland & England/Wales?

Probably one of them - in fact the only possibility showing in 1901 census:

James Campbell
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: James Campbell
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896
Relationship: Son
Mother's name: Elizabeth Campbell
Gender: Male
Where born: lochee, Forfarshire
Registration Number: 282/5
Registration district: Lochee
Civil Parish: Liff, Benvie and lnvergowrie
County: Angus
Address: 33 Mid St
ED: 2
Household schedule number: 148
LINE: 17
Roll: CSSCT1901_104
Household Members:
Name Age
Elizabeth Campbell 40
William Campbell 15
James Campbell 5

But you're not sure if he was born in Dundee or not, David?

There must be a gap in the Dundee birth records on Scotlands People.

There is no record of any Campbell being born in Dundee between 1867 and 1943.

Trying a few other common surnames at random -
no Smiths between 1867 and 1922.
No MacDonalds between 1867 and 1952.

However, there are these two. Lochee was a town which gradually became engulfed by Dundee.

CAMPBELL
JAMES
M
1895
282/5 244
Lochee

CAMPBELL
JAMES
M
1896
282/5 21
Lochee

If you register with Scotlands People, and buy the minimum of 30 credits for £7.50, you can view the images of the original documents - 6 credits each.

The cert will give you their parent's names, and the place and date of parents' marriages.

Of course, without more to go on, you still wouldn't know if either of them was your James or not.

Military records after 1922 are still with the MOD. They have to be ordered at a cost of £30.

Mind you, with such a common name & no dob, it'll be difficult job identifying them.

Does their MC give his father's name? It might be possible to find him on the 1901 Scottish census (transcriptions on various sites) or 1911 on Scotlandspeople which is pay to view. That would also hold his birth reg.
