For the record, that's the same address as in 1939.

[I know you've checked that, AQ]

Living in Ambra Vale in 1937:

Landslide in Gardens in Clifton Wood

Tons of earth crashed 20 feet into the carriageway at Ambrose Road, Clifton Wood, Bristol on Saturday when a landslide occurred in two gardens...
Half the back garden of Mr James Campbell of 50 Ambra Vale East also crashed into Ambrose Road...

my aunty thought it was around 1896 but she wasn't sure could have been earlier

The army records are from Ancestry, David.

After finding James in 1939 with the children, with DOB in 1885, I was only looking for James Campbells with births c1885, so all the army records (in fact everything after I posted the 1939 record) is on that basis.

But of course the DOB stated in 1939 may not be correct.

Where did you find the YOB of 1896? Is that likely to be more correct than 1885?

David Report 12 Jun 2018 20:32

sorry I tried but my aunty didn't know any more about her dad and my aunty Shirley who was born Shirley sharkey wont talk to me as I am a Campbell sad really .

once again thank you I don't know how you know were to look for all this info a I have tried and not found anything on james Campbell 1896 ???
P.S
I know pasty only lived for about 6 months but all the other children are right 4were born in or around Bristol and Shirley born in surrey

This man had been in the 3rd Black Watch before date of this document, (June 1915 ) and had bought his discharge:

James Campbell
in the British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920
Name: James Campbell
Gender: Male
Document Year: 1915
Residence Place: 20 St Andrew Street, Dundee
Regimental Number: 305295

He was a gas fitter, and his religion was Episcopal.
Regiment Name: Ha Fa Artile RAMC TF
Number of Images: 15
Form Title: Territorial Force Attestation

Name Relation to Soldier
James Campbell Self (Head)

His mother was Margaret Campbell, at the above address.
5ft 7ins tall.

Appointed to 3rd Highland Field Ambulance.

BUT -

Age 22 - so born c1893, so not our man.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jun 2018 22:10

If, perhaps, he went back to Dundee later in life, there's this possible death:

CAMPBELL
JAMES
66
1951
282/3 773
St Andrew (Dundee)

But James Campbell is a very common name.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jun 2018 22:04

Unfortunately James's DOB doesn't help with finding his death.

All the deaths of 1885 James Campbells in England/Wales are just for men born c1885 - no actual date given.
None of them are in Bristol.

A different man ??

James Campbell
in the British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920
Name: James Campbell
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1885
Birth Place: Dundee, Forfar
Age: 19
Document Year: 1904
Regimental Number: 8194
Regiment Name: Connaught Rangers
Form Title: Short Service Attestation
Number of Images: 23

Was already in 3rd Royal Highlanders in 1904.
Labourer, mill worker.
5ft 3.5ins, fresh complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair.

I think it says he was in the Connaught Rangers in Galway, and then in Mullingar.
Then served in Poona, India.

Intended place of residence (on discharge in 1907 ?? ) 7 Mary Street, Dundee.

Then there's a bit about discharge in 1914:
on medical grounds - tuberculosis which had originated in Lochee, Dundee, while on reserve.
Address in 1914: 29 Lorne (or maybe Lorna) Street, Lochee, Dundee.

NOK: sister, Catherine Campbell, 22 Mid Street, Lochee.

EDIT -

Maybe not the right James Campbell.
There's a small note at the bottom of one page which says either "Man died" or "Mum died. More likely "man died" 30/08/1917.

"patsy died 1924"

I think you mean Pansy, born 1924 in Wellingborough?

For our reference -

Daisy, John and James were all born in Bristol.

Shirley born in Surrey.

ArgyllGran Report 10 Jun 2018 11:55

As she married in Surrey, these might be possible births of Sharkey children, all born in Surrey :

Bridget M, 1938
Robert P, 1939
Shirley, 1940 3rd qr
Kathleen E, 1940 4th qr
John F, 1947
Dorothy A V, 1950

Of course, the two 1940 births can't both be children of the same parents.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 Jun 2018 11:50

And do you know her exact date of birth? That might help us to pick out her death from several for women of that name, born c1903.
