Captain henry john Butler (harry) RFC 1916-1919

Harry Butler, bron at Yorketown South Australia in 1889, became a pilot and squadron leader in the Royal Flying Corp in Britain during the First world war. We have discovered newspaper clipings he sent back to Australia, but wonder if there would be more records and some news of his in England or Scot;and? He was awarded an Air Force Cross too, and wondered why? How could we find out?

Interesting - the Air Force Cross isn't for wartime acts:

The Air Force Cross (AFC) is a military decoration awarded to personnel of the United Kingdom Armed Forces, and formerly also to officers of the other Commonwealth countries, for "an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying, though not in active operations against the enemy".




Born 1890, according to this record;

in the Great Britain, Royal Aero Club Aviators’ Certificates, 1910-1950
Name: Henry John Butler
Birth Date: 9 Nov 1890
Birth Location: Yorketown, Yorkes Peninsular, S Australia
Rank: Captain, RFC.
Certificate date: 29 Sept 1916

There's also a photo of him attached to that certificate, labelled:
2nd Lieut. Henry John Butler RFC (SR), 29 Sept 1916.

But I expect you have that.

Perhaps the Yorke Peninsula Visitor Information Centre would be able to help.

They produced a leaflet about his life (which you probably have), although it doesn't mention his Air Force Cross. But maybe they have more info since then ??

Perhaps it was for his general wartime service - instructing, learning German tactics, etc.
