Percy was my paternal grandfather who fought in the first world war.He was gassed and shot while in the trenches, sent home to Bovington to recuperate then sent to Gallipoli. He was married with 2 children at the time, poor bloke. Anyway he got home safe and lived until he was in his early sixties, it was damaged lungs that killed him due to being gassed. I have been trying to find his war records but to no avail. All I keep getting is his enlistment details, i.e. age, height, colour of hair and the fact he was in the marines until 1915 (when he was injured) when they transferred him so they could send him to Gallipoli. I would be most grateful for any ideas on how to find out more.

Thanks Pam Davies (nee Redsull)

Sorry Pam but over 70% of the WW1 documents were destroyed in the bombing of WW2.

I haven't even got the enlistment papers for my maternal grandfather.

As Pat says, around 70% of WW1 records were destroyed. Those that survived are listed on Findmypast. As his records are not on there I'm afraid you will not find them anywhere.

Thank you PatinCyprus and Kathleen Bell. How disappointing. I will check Findmypast and hope. Kind regards Pam x

It is just possible that a local paper may have reported his home-coming and recovery.

P J Redsull
Military Year: 1914-1915
Medal Awarded: 1914-15 Star
Regiment or Corps: Royal Engineers
Regimental Number: 236150
Previous Units: R.N.D. 1268 Spr.
Medal Forfeited: Yes . A236150 Z Res 25-2-19
Think the 24-2-19 is the date.
Date of disembarkation (in a theatre of war) 15-7-15 followed by 2b.

There is a note in the remarks column - Auth RE/5(E?) submitted by the Admiralty, and seems to be linked to the forfeiture.

This site is quite useful for interpreting medal cards
