It's also possible that he didn't serve with any of the forces.
Neither of my grandfathers and only one of OH's did.
He may have been more useful in a 'war effort' industry.

One worked in an Arsenal
One ran a dairy in the London Docks area.
One worked for the Gas Board.

Detective did write on 30 June that 70% of WW1 documents were destroyed in the blitz.

He's too old for WW2 but those docs are still with MOD and not online.

You may be unlucky, I have docs for paternal grandfather but nothing for maternal grandfather and both served and survived WW1.

As you've posted on Military Chat, are you looking for WW1 service records? Are you sure he was in one of the Services?
In case you aren't aware, nearly 70% of the Army ones were destroyed during WW2 bombing.

Medal Cards were stored elsewhere and have survived. Unfortunately, without further information its impossible to whittle down the numerous W Ward's to even suggest which one is Wilson's.

To Commemorate The Battle of the Somme, both Ancestry and Findmypast are allowing free access to their military records. If you open an account and they ask for a CC no, make sure that you cancel the trial before they charge your card

What do you want to know?
You must have got back to him somehow., how do you know his place of birth and year of birth?
Who were his parents, did he marry, have children?
Or is it purely that you want to find out if he was in the Forces?
