Does anyone have information about my uncle john?

Do you have any other information about him - such as when and where he was born, or if he was married etc.?

Further to Kath's questions, when did he serve? WW2 records won't be online. Most are with the MOD and have to be purchased for £30.

WW2 records for a number of regiments with 'Guards' in their title can only be ordered from Wellington Barracks in London. Not entirely sure if the Scotts come into that category.

John was born in 1906 in Edinburgh and died in London in 1974. I understand that he was part of the BEF and was sent to France about 1939.He was married in Edinburgh in 1933 to Kathleen Rose Parnell.

We have at least established that john was a Platoon Seageant Major, not an RSM and confirmed the award of the DCM..

In 1915 the ranks of Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) and Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) were properly formalised.

There was also, briefly, a Warrant Officer Class 111 - respectively, Troop and Platoon Sergeant Majors - which was intended to give SNCOs experience in command. No appointments were made in this rank after about 1940.
