Hello,
My father in law was born in Swansea Feb 1910. We believe he sailed to India with his father (in Military)) Mother and two other siblings.
I have found him in the 1911 census in India.

Would they of sailed all together and on a normal pasenger boat or a Militray one and any ideas where from.
Many thanks
Anne

Sorry, can't answer your question but have you looked for his army records? If they still exist then they might give you some clues.

I have previously looked for his army records but couldn't find them. Also checked the passenger lists on ancestry also couldn't find them.

This is why I am thinking they may of sailed on a Military boat .

There quite often aren't passenger lists for military voyages.

Can you give the father's name and when/where born and we'll try to help.

Again from FMP (which I think has a better variety of military records than Ancestry):

Royal Artillery attestations 1883-1942
First name(s) William J.
Last name Chapple
Age 15
Birth year 1883
Birth place Swansea

Definitely him - wife and children all named. Will send the image to Anne.

They probably went on a troopship, which could have sailed from any port in the UK.

It sounds horrific - I'm glad they were using aircraft by the time we were involved in overseas postings!

Hello,
Thankyou Marie. It seems very likely that Dorothy is Doris. Especially as the two other names match.
I can't open the attachment you sent so can't comment on that.
Would I be able with his regiment No be able to apply somewhere to get his full records.

Andysmum, Will read the link you sent later.
Feeding time for the g kids now.

Anne

I've just sent you another message - it seems the file may have been just a bit too large for GR messages to handle.
