A tree on Ancestry has him as

Patrick Carling
Birth 02 Nov 1922 in Sunderland, England
Death Jun 1971 in Islington, Greater London, England

They have attached a photo. The cap ribbon says HMS Caledonia****

****HMS Caledonia was a shore based Royal Navy training establishment located within the naval dockyard at Rosyth, and was responsible for artificer apprentice training from 1937 to 1985, with many thousands of young men said to have undergone training at the establishment.

Mo - WW2 records are still with the MOD. Follow this link to down-load the forms. Unless he or his widow can sign them the records will cost £30. You may be waiting for up to a year.
The form says to fill in with as much detail as possible. Obviously you don't have his service number but you may have sufficient information for them to identify the correct record set

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I want to try and find the Royal Navy War Records of Patrick Carling, born 1922 in Sunderland.

I do not have his Service Number, but I know he was on HMS Shropshire, Ajax and I believe, Exeter.
